Community Focus - BlueWestlo

We have another Youtube/streamer straight outta the Destiny community to focus our spotlight on. BlueWestlo got his start making funny YouTube videos, and now streams his adventures on Twitch. We sat down with him to talk about his experiences in the Destiny community. I’ll get out of the way and let him tell you all about it.

Who are you, and how would you describe your role in the Community?

BW: Hello! My name is BlueWestlo. I generally like to think of myself as a guy who tries to keep the mood of everything light hearted whenever I get the chance. I collaborate a lot with other content creators and do my best to help out others in the community. I just genuinely love this collective of amazing people who play Destiny and spend plenty of time supporting everyone I can. Often times that means I'm a guest on videos or streams of other content creators more than my own projects! To keep it simple, my role is just being the guy who doesn't take himself very seriously, if at all, and loves working with other community members!

Where do you share your light hearted moods on the Internet?

BW: You can find me on my Twitch where I make a fool of myself hopping recklessly into everything the game has to offer. My YouTube is where you'll find a bunch of silly videos. And of course I'm always on Twitter!

How did you first get into the YouTube/streaming game?

BW: I originally got into Twitch and YouTube through little short films I would make for Destiny. They were very scatterbrained and childish, but also quite charming. I prided myself on the way they reflected the thoughts and ideas of the people who made up the Destiny community. I was deeply inspired by all of the Halo machinimas I would watch in middle school that really added a personality to the games for me. I didn't see many people doing the same thing for Destiny, so I jumped into it and didn't look back! Luckily a lot of people really enjoyed them, and because of them I met a lot of really awesome people that I'm humbled to get to call friends now. I owe everything I've accomplished in Destiny to the friends I've met through it. Eventually those friendships led to collaborations with other awesome folks, which led to more friends, which naturally guided me toward the idea of streaming more which is what I spend whatever free time I have doing! It was really a very big snowball effect and sometimes I still find myself in disbelief at how many fantastic people truly make up the community.

It’s truly a fantastic community to be a part of, in my totally biased opinion. Do you have a favorite moment from streaming Destiny?

BW: Very early on in Destiny's lifespan, before I really knew anyone, I always enjoyed helping people through Nightfalls and the Vault of Glass Raid. One night, I decided to pick up a bunch of random people from my stream who had never completed it before. Keep in mind Vault of Glass was only a few weeks old so even the most experienced Raiders didn't truly know all the ins and outs of the Raid yet. I brought one of my more experienced friends to help out, but four members of the Fireteam had never even set foot in front of the Vex lair at that point. Several of them were very young kids who were ecstatic just to have someone to even walk with them into the Raid, to even get a glimpse inside. We spent hours fighting through the vault. Wiped dozens of times. A few of us got frustrated. Despite that, we pushed through. Each time we wiped everyone learned a little more about how to be better. It was amazing to see people brighten up when they figured out how to really master their role in the Fireteam. It took us several hours, but we managed to down Atheon! Hearing their reactions when they grabbed their raid armor and fresh weapons was an incredible experience.

There is no other feeling like finishing a Raid for the first time. What is your favorite Subclass and gear loadout?

BW: Stormcaller! Emperor Palpatine! Unlimited power! I love playing Stormcaller and bringing down lightning storms on people. Whether it be a squad of Taken enemies or a Fireteam of Guardians in PvP, chaining lightning between enemies is one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had in a game.  In addition, anyone familiar with me knows I'm a HUGE fan of scout rifles. They truly feel like master's weapons in the game and are so incredibly reliable wherever you go it's impossible not to love them. In year one I brought my MIDA Multi-Tool everywhere with me, and in year two you'll basically never see me without some variant of an Omolon scout rifle.

You just proved that every Guardian embraces a specialty. As a streamer, what makes your channel special?

BW: Fun and ridiculousness ALWAYS comes first. I'm never trying to be the best at anything, I'm just trying to play the game with my friends and have a good time doing it! I'm always trying to interact with everyone watching and try to get them involved somehow! Destiny is fun and that's what I want to have when I play it!

What would you like to add or change about Destiny?

BW: I would love it if there was a cinematic option or even an equipable camera that allowed all the creators of the community to more easily craft Destiny videos. Witty little short films are how I got started out and it'd be awesome to see what people do with accessible tools. And of course, custom games. The community spends an incredible amount of time setting up astounding events and custom games would make their lives easier and open up incredible horizons for people to explore. Oh, and lastly, more Strikes in the Strike playlists! Strikes are awesome, but I'd love to dive into the really big pool of them more often!

Thanks for subjecting yourself to our interrogation.

BW: Thank you so much for having me!

Blue Westlo has some great content, so go give it a watch. Maybe you too can join him on a Raid or in the Crucible sometime in the future.
