Community Focus – TheGrreatGatsby

Raids are the pinnacle of the Destiny experience. They require teamwork and coordination to complete. Well, until someone figures out how to do them on their own, but no one is going to be taking down the Warpriest solo until they figure out how to be in three places at once.

With the long list of mechanics required, Oryx was thought to be impossible to defeat alone. But the Community, much like life, finds a way. We’re always surprised to see the new amazing things players are able to do in Destiny.

We sat down with TheGrreatGatsby, the first to complete this amazing feat, and asked him how he was able to fell the King without any backup.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you fit into the Destiny Community.

Gatsby: Hi! My name is TheGrreatGatsby, but some of you may know me as "Frostbyte3" on Twitch. I don't stream that often, but when I do, it's something that's epic and cool. I'm just your average 18-year-old kid from Brooklyn, New York who struggles with SAT's, college applications, and homework during the day. In my spare time, I'm a Guardian of the City. That may sound a little corny, but it means a lot to me. I'm someone who likes to help out in the community. Being someone who knows how hard it can be to find random people and do well with them, I like to balance the scale. There's nothing that means more to me than doing something like helping a dad and his son finally get to the Lighthouse and hearing them scream with joy over the mic, or helping a few people finally get the elusive Black Spindle they've tried hours upon hours for, or solo the nightfall for a kinderguardian. For me, no 320 loot can compare to that feeling. Other than that, I'm just your average Destiny player, with over 1000 hours logged. I'm also a filthy casual. (Some people think that I main a Warlock.... I actually main a Hunter #HunterMasterRace.)

Glad to see you’re a fellow Hunter, old sport. Where can we find you online?

Gatsby: You can find me on Xbox One, with the Gamertag "TheGrreatGatsby", on YouTube with the username "The Great Gatsby" and on Twitch with the username "Frostbyte3" or "TheGrreatGatsby". And yes, I watched the movie and loved the book. :)

Can you briefly explain how the hell you “casually” soloed Oryx?

Gatsby: Solo'ing Oryx was a million times harder than it appeared in the video. It took weeks of planning by some of the smartest people I've ever known. The outcome was, well, unexpected. The idea first came after watching the World First 2-Man Oryx video. Textbook_1987, ADeathCard, and ShootForCookies, and I all joined a party where we decided the next great challenge should be figuring out a way to Solo Oryx. Obviously, at first, we were totally stumped. How were we gonna stun this guy? How were we gonna get 16 blights detonated in 5 rounds? How were we gonna have enough ammo to damage Ogres? How were we gonna have self-revive every single round fast enough? How were we going to get past Shade? What's going to happen during final stand? With all these obstacles, we thought it was impossible - until I figured out a 300+ Sleeper Simulant could stun Oryx with 3 shots to the face. That’s the spark that lit the fire. Shout out to Oryx for helping me out near the end and despawning all those adds.

You mentioned that some others helped in figuring out strategies, who were they and what did pieces of the puzzle did they provide?

Gatsby: As I said before, the people who helped create this strategy are some of the smartest and most skilled players I've ever had the honor of playing with. Every single person I mention below contributed to something, in some way. So here goes.
  • Figuring out how to Stun Oryx and where to stand when Stunning him: Me (TheGrreatGatsby)
  • Figuring out how to damage Ogres and where to stand while damaging them: Everyone
  • Figuring out how to get 2 Ogres from one side come over to the other side, making it possible to get more than 2 bombs in one round: ADeathCard, Ehroar, CommanderCuesta, Textbook_1987, sc_slayerage
  • Figuring out that during the aerial bomb phase, damaging the boomer Knights results in Super energy at the end of the phase: ADeathCard, ComanderCuesta, Ehroar, Me, Textbook_1987
  • Figuring out how to cheese Shade : ADeathCard
  • Figuring out that you have to kill the Shade instead of cheese it, for final stand, since when you cheese the Shade the big black blight stays in the front of the platform the whole time so there is no way to damage Oryx's chest during final stand: Me, Textbook_1987
  • Figuring out that using a weapon with surplus in the beginning results in more ammo per brick from Thralls: CommanderCuesta
  • Figuring out how to manipulate and control the vessel, which is the thing that stopped this from being soloed for a long time: Me
  • Now that the secret vessel trick has been revealed to the world, I expect a lot more people are going to be soloing this. That’s all right with me.

What motivated you to try in tackle such an amazing challenge?

Gatsby: A lot of people motivated me in the beginning. There were times I just wanted to give up and throw my controller out the window, but there was one guy always there telling me I could do this. His name is Textbook_1987.

Do you have any plans for future endeavors like soloing Oryx on Hard Mode while in straitjacket under water?*

Gatsby: Since you ask, yes I do. I plan on soloing Oryx on Hard Mode wearing tight red and blue spandex whilst hanging upside down from my ceiling eating Honey Nut Cheerios, all the while counting from 1 to 777 and sacrificing my Fatebringer (which I still have by the way) to the almighty RNGesus.

But I do plan on soloing Oryx on Hard Mode. I can't guarantee I'll be the first to do it, as the only way it'll be possible is by being Light 320. I'm excited to give it some serious attempts when the time comes. I've already got a new strategy all planned out.

Is there anything you would like to add or change about Destiny?

Gatsby: There are a lot of things I'd like to add or change about Destiny, but it's not my position to tell you how to make your amazing game. One thing I'd really love is a Legendary version of the Makeshift Scarf that can be infused, because walking around with a giant orange Willy Wonka cloak just to show off my frabjous helmet and gear, isn't all that great. And make Hand Cannons good again, please?

This story was similar to that of David vs. Goliath...if David had been armed with a Sleeper Simulant. Even with the best weaponry, taking down Oryx is a tall task. We will have more intimate profiles of people from the community for you in the future. Until then we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

*Note: please do not attempt to play Destiny while in a straitjacket under water.
