Community Focus: INVSMCHN
One of the most interesting results of hosting such a creative community on Bungie.net is that we get to view the world of Destiny through so many filters. Each artist puts their own spin on the imagery that’s shaping the setting of your next adventure. They take it and they make it their own.
This week, we’re focusing on INVSMCHN. For weeks now, we have watched his riffs on our creations splash across the Internet. One of our Art Directors described his work as stylized minimalism. (And yes, we do all talk nicely about you when you’re not around.) As you're about to discover, the way he describes his work is also minimalist in making an impact.
Let’s start with your handle. Would you translate what INVSMCHN means to you?
INVSMCHN: It means 'Invisible Machine.'
Your work is clean and precise – and much different than anything we’ve seen so far. Artists, like the Guardians you illustrate, have a variety of different tools at their disposal. What can you tell us about your process?
INVSMCHN: I mostly use Photoshop. I scan paper, card, and material textures and layer them with varying opacities on the canvas. Then, I try lots of ways to make the image sit right, by changing colours and shapes. It involves a lot of trial and error, but I get there eventually. I love the freedom digital art gives me.
We love the results. Your work is cool, especially this conceptual movie poster.
What is it about the world of Destiny that inspires you to blaze your own trail as an artist?
INVSMCHN: The concept art, when I first saw it, it blew my mind completely, I just knew from that point I was going to be obsessed with Destiny, I hadn't even seen any gameplay footage! It really got my creative juices going.
I’m resisting the urge to make a joke about creative juices. Before I cave, let’s pivot to your origin story. Quickly, now, do you have any formal training as an artist? Or are your abilities a gift from the traveler?
INVSMCHN: I am totally self-taught, I started just messing about on Photoshop and Paintshop Pro back in 2001, haven't stopped since.
So, from one artist to another, tell our team which image from Destiny is your favorite.
INVSMCHN: It’s my phone background.
Awww, so you can take us wherever you go. Speaking of future adventures, what would be your dream job with an obvious skill set like the one you wield?
INVSMCHN: Conceptual Artist for a video games company.
Keep padding that portfolio. With passion and talent, anything is possible.
In the meantime, Bungie will stay focused on this very visible creative machine. So should you. There are a lot of places to keep him dialed in. Our forum is just one of them. He keeps his own house online, and it’s linked all over the place. We look forward to seeing more of his art, so we’ll keep creating our own.
