If you havent already finish the story so you can do all strikes then start doing the Vanguard Strike playlist on the lvl 20 then step up to 22 and so on. You will start getting rare armor fairly frequently which should contain light. From the amount of accumulated light you are wearing will be what your level is. Playing crucible well can result in being rewarded with rare and legendary items. Also find a clan to join at the tower your not signed to any of them and can switch around when ever you want but you rank up by wearing there specific Class Armor. Class Armor is the Cloak for the Hunter, Badge for the Titan, and Bond for the Warlock. They add nothing to the characters abilities other then gaining rep for the clan of which you are wearing by completing bounties and PvP. They are purchased from the clan head figures on the tower area for around 2500 glimmer if my memory serves me well. Once you have enough rep you can purchase that clans weaponry and armor which is all legendary. Doing that will take ages at the games current state as the cap for crucible marks is 100 marks a week and most clan items cost around 80 marks. Once you have enough light you will be lvl 26 or higher and will be able to play raids and heroic bounties from these you can be rewarded with exotic items. Fully decked out in exotic will achieve you the current max level of 30. Im sure theres a few out there now but the highest I have seen is 27. So all in all don't worry the games not over its just begun by the time most people reach max level dlc will be released making the cap higher. Dont know if its true or not but I have heard of a few people coming across items which need a level of 80 to be used. Not sure if thats a glitch or an item that was accidentally left in by bungie too soon, Im hoping its the latter.

you need to get armor that say "light +10" (or whatever number). This is how you level up for then on. You need a certain amount of light from armor to level up.
