Opposite reaction: surprised the number is so high. The article is quick to label such people atheists, but it sounded like they simply did not affiliate with an organized religion. So is this perhaps disenchantment with scandal-ridden churches rather than disbelief in the afterlife?

    The article you linked, not the actual report itself. The article opens: [quote]The religious right will be quaking in their boots, or perhaps saying that [b]atheists[/b] are lying, when they read a new report (PDF) from the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life.[/quote] (Emphasis mine) But as you so rightly point out, only a vanishingly small percentage of people are actually identifying as atheist. Which would support my feeling that the issue is organized religion, not JC and the Big Man upstairs.
