The university system in the US is incredibly top heavy.
The entire school program is designed to tell you that college is the next step when you are done with traditional school, but for most students it really isn't and there is really nothing in place to promote alternatives. As a result of this, hundreds of thousands of people enter adult hood with crippling debt and an employment situation that just doesn't have room for them.

That's what they taught me on college. It always made me laugh. If you don't intern while in college you are boned, and if you do you're still not guaranteed a job. My medical friends have done well (Nurses mostly) but after that it's been pretty abysmal.
