Programming: C# and Fortran Thread

I'm learning the "R" language right now but I am interested in learning C# and/or Fortran. I was just wondering about some good places to get started? 1) What do you use to write these languages in? I don't know what they are called: compiler/assembler/program? "R" is great because it is open source and free to download... is there a good option thats free for C#? What about Fortran? 2) Know any good online (free) sources to get started (i.e. textbooks or templates or examples...)?
