Been discussing it in seminar. It is about whales and a guy who is a god like figure who wants to kill Moby Dick (the great white whale). I am trying to like it but still don't understand how it is philosophy. There are many philosophical terms in the book and some characters describe things for ages but I still find it difficult to read in my major. Anyone can honestly read this book like a novel about whales.
I find it interesting that Ahab is pretty much trying to be God kind of like Satan in Paradise Lost. It is pretty much a encyclopedia about whales!
I don't think Ahab is trying to be god (tho every captain is kind of god of their own ship), so much as others believe in him in an almost religious way (like the lightning bit). Ahab just wants his revenge, everything else doesn't matter to him by the end.
