So what is the point of sprint in a Halo game?

As I can see this forum seems very willing to allow 343's massive cock to violate them recently so I thought this would spawn a decent discussion. To all the people who defend 343 and all their crap, does sprint actually add anything of substance to Halo? Please, come forth.

  • You move faster. It is a basic mechanic that makes the game different in (imo) a positive way. It frees up my armor ability.

    • I think it introduces a fair level of silly buggers, I barely used it in Reach and Halo 4.

    • I think it's kinda dumb, just makes you run to your death, instead of walk

    • >Logfish You must really hate running fast because it makes you fell really slow on your couch. Just deal with it and buy the game or don't. No one cares about your opinion besides you or you mother. Relax and either grow with the game, or go join another franchise that doesn't have sprint.

I'd like to use this post to dispel another myth that people seem to be flinging around constantly on this forum: That spartan's in the original trilogy couldn't run (I shouldn't even have to entertain this because canon doesn't matter in competitive MP). In the original Halo games (the good ones without sprint) the spartan would be jogging if you pushed the stick right forward, and they would walk forward if you put less pressure on it. In these games, your spartan could actually run and shoot at the same time because he was an actual super soldier, if you care so much about canon you could say he was reserving energy for upcoming battles by jogging instead of sprinting. So this still makes sense in canon without compromising gameplay.

    • Out of all of the Halo games with sprint I have never encountered someone that uses sprint to escape. Sprint in my opinion just speeds up the time from spawn to the action and doesn't detract from skill needed or makes the game more casual.

      • Why can a super soldier not sprint? What's the problem with that? The books have them running as fast as a modern car, I don't have a problem with allowing them to run faster in game. In halo 5, sprint is balanced. I'm all for going back to its roots, but most players have no problem with sprint, as should you.

          • It allows for quicker gameplay and the ability to get into the fight quicker. What does it take away? They've already addressed the use of Sprint as a getaway. You can't use while under fire and you can't recharge shields. It's purely an offensive ability, you can't use it to escape to escape or risk your shields, and can't use it while in a sight line of another player.

              • In halo 5, Sprint actually makes sense. The other halos, not so much. Some jumps need Sprint, thrust, and clamber to be made, which for some players seems to be a mind -blam!-. I guess a crouch jump would have been easier for them. Consequential circumstances happen when you do each of those though. Which is good and bad at the same time. Every one love's punishment upon a bad move. The games really all about team Work, and multiple spots with multiple access points on the map. So Sprint is a means to quickly close the gap and flank a team trying to camp a spot. You aren't as predictable as in other games where some spots have only one entry way making it to easy for the campers. Like Eden for example, where the sword and sniper spawn, how many ways can you get in from? How many positions from afar can you shoot in from as well? So being able to Sprint while a team mate is distracting and engaging the team is extremely useful. Its also punishable. - shield won't regen if injured -Increases shield charge delay to be much longer than the normal charge rate even AFTER you've stopped sprinting -Can't Sprint if you attempt to Sprint as you get hit - can't shoot while sprinting - you're on radar Etc. Sprints found a home in halo 5. If you think it's broken, Play any other halo where sprints in it. What else does it add? Here's a basic formula we will use. X is a variable for weapon in these first few. The counter to this formula is thruster. Thruster, which some believe breaks the game, doesn't for this reason. If you spam thrust, you won't have it available for 4 seconds. A lot can happen in 4 seconds for halo 5. Formula 1 Sprint + slide + X X is sword, user sliders under AR (any gun but shottie) fire and into lunge range X is shottie, user is sprinting and sees an enemy who caught him during Sprint. User can slide and deliver fatal shot. In older halo games, you're stuck and have to stop Sprint. You'll die. Slide must be performed. ..which not everyone will be able to, reaction time and decision making come into Play (equates to a skilled tactic) Things of this nature. Thruster again, counters. So said combo is not broken. Now x is a Spartan ability X is charge. This is quite awesome to perform during a flank. Charge isn't abused in halo 5, so when you do pull it off it doesn't feel cheap. Especially cause it isn't lethal in a frontal attack. Nice #'s btw. Sorry you don't like the beta All that much though. It's pretty awesome for me though. Real talk, I'm not trying to be sarcastic.

Allows players to get to action spots faster and coordinate with team mates faster at the cost of not being able to defend yourself for the duration. Makes engagements and power struggles happen more frequently.

You move faster to certain choke points.
But muh slower base speed
Barely, the difference is so small it doesn't make a difference. You're sprinting half the time anyway.
But muh cheap escape from a battle I should have lost
Shields don't recharge when sprinting. If you're shot before reaching max speed you stop sprinting. You can't sprint away from a battle where you're getting shot, because you can't sprint at all. Gameplay is not slowed, because the most you can do is walk away while being shot and you die before you can escape. I haven't used sprint to escape a fight I should have lost once, because them shooting me renders my sprint unusable.
