Hell, I'm retired now. That was my main purpose for (what I thought was) the last five years of my career, just to make it out alive but still always wanting to make the next rank (so I could stay in longer).
When I hit the 20 mark, I was like "ok, I made it. I'm staying in because I want to. These last two years will be smooth." I extended a year to try and make MSgt but they said I was too junior, lol. So, after 23 years, I left the only job I loved, the Marine Corps.
So after all that babbling, whatever you choose, just stick with it or find what you really like and work to do that. You can be the best at something you hate, mediocre at something you love, or anywhere in between, but part of doing it right is just commiting to it. You never know how well it'll go until you do.
Thanks, good read. I have 5 to go to 20. In the Navy btw. If I've learned one thing it's that I Prob won't be were I think I will be by the time I get there. So I'm just embracing it until I know what's next.
Yep. If you do re-up, it's always a fence walk, every time. Even at 16 yrs I was unsure if I wanted to stay. I made a lat move to a new job and was really second guessing it but I was in a contract so it was stay or go.
Lat move actually worked out because I had plateaued at avionics and was ready for something new. If you don't like your rate, call your detailer. People always say you can't talk to the detailer (monitor for us) but you can. It's always an option.
