A Letter to Bungie - Loot is not the answer

Dear Bungie, I love Destiny The universe is interesting and intriguing, pushing me to find out more, learn its secrets. The combat is smooth, fast paced, challenging, leaving me excited, stressed and nervous. The planets are curious, beautiful and stunning. However, despite my love of Destiny, something tragic is happening, I'm loosing interest. You've listened to community, patching and transforming the game slowly but surely, however, there is something wrong at Destiny's core, it is lacking ambition, unwilling to take risks. The recent IGN review of the Dark Below is a perfect example of my growing concern for Destiny. While loot is a major, if not central part of Destiny, it is not enough to sustain a game. Borderlands already exists, and WoW has done it before. Chasing the best possible loot can push a player to achieve greatness, to become power and as you yourselves say, Become Legend. But loot is a shallow and ultimately unsatisfying track. Running raids and strikes, playing in crucible, all come down to loot. You don't run the Vault of Glass or Crota to defeat the ultimately evil and protect the universe. Because there is no physical transformation in that very world. You gain new weapons and armour, reach new heights in power. Yet, while the weapon or armour may look more interesting, make a new sound, give you extra rewards, is that all. Is my existence in Destiny to receive treats. Humanity is just reaching toward the starts, and this dark power grows, yet my attempts to stop this darkness, and rebuild the greatness of man is to make myself more powerful, at least until the level cap is raised and new items introduced, so I may start all over again. If we are to dream big, then I ask you, no beg you to do the same. Make this universe the 10 year epic saga it deserves to be. Take risks! Burn our cities, threaten our tower, smash our walls. Create the sense of impending doom, show us the threat of the darkness, not just mindless clone armies to melt into glimmer. Allow us to develop the world, establish outposts on the Moon, Mars and Venus, push back the darkness! Then reward us! Do not give us a task, then multiply it by a thousand, do not give us reputation to gather and build in order to get our shinny new toy, until we get bored and discard it for something new. Show us depths, show us a world that draws us in and holds, not merely because we can get toys. We are not shallow and petty people who require a constant stream of new toys to keep our interest. No! We need a purpose! We need to believe. So I challenge you Bungie! Change Destiny, create something amazing. You could keep the current formula, and people would continue to buy and play. You will continue to make vast quantities of money. But is that all you, as a company, as creators want to do? Do you not want to create history, make something so compelling it makes us happy, sad, angry, feel life. Loot is not the answer. Loot provides an easy way to keep people interest in the short term. However it will not last. It is not enough to create greatness and become legend. Eventually people get bored, and turn to something else. Destiny should not deserve this fate. Allow us to change the world and push back the threats. Give us stories and challenges. Not items and grinding. I want to travel to vast worlds, build, change, create, protect, fight and ultimately experience. Not find the best way to collect glimmer, defeat a boss a hundred times, and finally get that one gun, finalizing my petty collection of exotic weapons. Give us more. We are hungry for it! Oh and for god sake add matchmaking to Raids and Nightfall, sure having a party member drop out during a raid is annoying. But being unable to find a group of friends, or other players easily is a far greater problem. DestinyLFG exists because Destiny lacks. Ignoring you player base when the outcry is so clear and loud is to accept defeat, the arrogance of Macbeth led to his demise. Inspire us with your willingness to try new things, change the world, and freaking kick ass. Risk it all! Kind Regards, A Concerned Destiny Fan

  • Nice post, I agree with you in that I would prefer to feel epic then worry about exotics.... though I still get excited on Xur day! I fear though it's not always bungies fault, I feel they could make a new exciting raid/new world today rich in story with amazing new gameplay but some people will just cheese it or blast through it to get the new gear and not even stop to observe. Which I always find odd but everyone to their own. I also love the idea of recapturing outposts and the sort, I do wonder if they would have to make it private or like a strike type thing as not sure if it would work open world? What I would like to see is something like a 12 player map where you start on a frontier overrun by the darkness and you & your team have to make a stand at the last fortress. Once defended you have to go out and slowly take back certain points e.g. defence turrets, power supply, drone factory ect ect and all crescendo into attacking the 'Warlord'. Maybe I am stuck in the days of World of Warcraft, but love or hate it I always felt Epic & making a difference e.g. world changes & intense cut scenes. I wish only the same for Destiny (Disclaimer: I am aware WoW was more gear based than destiny could imagine, but more referring to the additional content you get once you have that gear)
