It doesn't matter if a person can or can't afford $20. You bought the base game. The base game came included with weeklys and nightfalls. You have had that for months. Now Bungie is taking that away. I don't care if it is once in a while or not. It's still taking an experience they're taking away that they originally sold you. I don't care if its for one week, base game owners are being given the short end of the stick. You can't get coins and you have one less opportunity to an exotic. No game should take away from the base experience. Games should be built to ENCOURAGE you to buy DLC ON THEIR OWN MERITS, NOT REQUIRE YOU TO KEEP BASE GAME CURRENT. Having to take something away is, once again, cheesing the players and taking shortcuts to development. Make the content worth owning...don't make it a requirement to enjoy the base experience they(I) already paid for. I bought the DLC and I still think it's unfair. I would be ticked too if I couldn't play the game as it was sold to me. After learning about the stupid exotic upgrade thing, there's a higher value to strange coins. This week I plan on jumping on the weekly and build a safe supply so I can upgrade my weapons. I'm glad I can do that....but that can't happen this week for base game owners. You provide great suggestions with your critical feedback OP and I CANNOT understand those defending this. I don't know why it is hard to have a non-DLC track. The answer is because they want to push you into it. If the expansion content is optional make it optional...don't sell off part of the original game with it. (and yes, even if it only happens once in a while it still is an experience taken away) Saying "wait a week" or " suck up the dough" is ignoring the principle issue and feeding the issue. No one is complaining about not having access to the new content, but they are complaining about losing access to an experience they had with the base game. Why is this hard to understand?

  • You'd be right if they didn't have the rights to change what they see as the base game as and when they see fit. The tandcs are a bitch

  • I know they have a right to do it because it s their game. It doesn't mean it's 'right' to do.

  • Sorry for the multiple pastes. I don't forum much... But really if you read that you have to see that a quarantine from players with DLC would have wrought worse feedback. Bottom line... We can go back and fourth all day. They did something they legally could, and I think this option keeps the vanilla version the most playable

  • First off, thanks for your post. Something key you said in this post is they did something they 'legally' could. I don't dispute that at all. I don't think they did the ethical thing though. I get the counterpoint but I still stand my ground on what I said. My biggest issue is taking something away from the base game experience. That's my complaint. It's not fair to them. I say them because I BOUGHT the expansion. This doesn't apply to me. I can play Crota 200 times if I want. I still think it is unfair to those who don't have The Dark Below that they have to go without Nightfalls and Weekly's. They paid for that experience and were given that experience for 3 months. Being told they can only have it once in a while isn't cool though. They paid money too. I think they have a right to feel cheated. I am making a stink about it because the business practice, to me, is not ethical. Regarding your arguments about what they would have done and having to invest in a separate server....I'm not trying to sound crappy either but tough. If they are going to sell that experience to base game players then don't take it away from them...even if it's only a week ( or 3 weeks over the course of time). They should have had a different model then. I do respect your counterpoint...I really do Millertime. I'm sorry, on principle this shouldn't be an accepted practice. Some have said 'it's just a game'. That's not the point. It could be a car....a service...whatever....either way it's not a reasonable practice to do things. People still paid money for this. Some disagree and I can respect your opinion. I don't accept it though and I'm going to call for people to think about the practice. Thanks for your thoughts. Good conversations and counterpoint!

I agree with you that it sucks. But I'm interested in your thoughts: Do you think people would be less pissed off if they were locked out of their friends list vs this strike? Edit: I see that you mentioned toward it; but "tough" has been said multiple different ways in responses to post like this one. I just want to know which way people as a whole would rather have it. No friends, or one strike you can't play for a week every 6 or so

I think people would have understood if there was a lock keeping non-DLC players from playing the (new) strike EDIT: as long as they had a base game strike that qualified as a nightfall still to fall back on. Am I understanding your question correctly?

  •
I am going to respond to this without being a dick. In order to create these separate playlists you desire, there must be a separate server. These servers cost money to create and maintain. Also, more servers, more potential for a crash. So what you would probably get if they were to heed your request would not be what you want. Crucible is easy... Only 12 players max per instance. If you were to make a separate server for activities that cross into public space (strikes), the way they would do it is quarantine those who didn't buy DLC. You would get nothing from the update (world crota swords, new vanguard armor), and you would be unable to play with people who have it. Want to hit the vault of glass with your friends? Nope... They have dark below and you don't. So before you start asking for things like this, try to understand why they did it the way they did. You can't play nightfall for a week... But you can still play with your buddies AND got some cool stuff for free. I think that's not too awful of a trade off, what are your thoughts now?

  • But everybody is already doing multiple strikes on multiple servers, right? So what's the difference? All they would have to do is write a subcommand that would displace people with out the DLC into the next default nightfall or weekly. You wouldn't have to quarantine people. If we're just basing it off of Bungie themselves and not Activision, you can see what they did with Halo. No quarantine, just play lists. They've done it before, albeit on a different game, so the could do it but I highly doubt they will. #Moneyvision

  • It's easy when you're doing something like crucible. They have written the sub command. Problem is when you're accessing the public world. That programming becomes a bit more intense than restricting one aspect of a play list

Having to take something away is, once again, cheesing the players and taking shortcuts to development.
The whole purpose of the DLC is to offer something new and exciting. It encourages you to buy into it. It just so happens the first Weekly event has the DLC content which kind of makes sense and offers an incentive to pick it up. Nothing was taken away from the base users who haven't purchased the DLC. When it's not the new DLC they will have access to it again as normal. That is a fairly normal practice in most online games to include MMO's.

  • Just because some people accept it doesn't mean it is right. I challenge you saying 'nothing was taken away from the base users who haven't purchased the DLC'. They can't play Nightfall this week. they can't play weekly this week. It IS taken away. If they were looking forward to their chance to play Nightfall or Weekly this week and were told they can't, it is, by definition, taken away. Just because we paid for DLC doesn't mean it's right to tell them 'just suck it up...buy the DLC' or put posts up saying here's what you can buy for $15-$20. It's not about that. It's about paying for something you reasonably assumed you had with your game and then it being removed from the game. Don't let them play expanded content. Let them play their own game. That's all I'm saying.

  • I'm not gonna copy and paste it again, but look for my response. I feel as though you may change your mind when you know what a very probably alternative was (quarantining non DLC from DLC players completely)

  • It's still there you just can't play it this week if you don't have the DLC is all.Nothing was taken away. You have the 1st and 2nd DLC already but gotta pay to unlock it to play it.So your whole "taking" away content argument is actually pretty pathetic at best. So you pay your $15 to get into the strip club, once in the one chick you want to see is only working the VIP rooms that night so you can't see here unless you pay extra for VIP.Do you get mad and complain? or fork over the extra $$$? or what till another night?

It is the same thing as buying a new car. Driving it for a few months then waking up one morning and finding the wheels are gone. With a note saying you need to buy the new upgrade package to get your wheels back. It is wrong on every level what they did here.

  • BigChicklet, you bring up a great point. It's just a game. I'm more upset at the ethics of the practice though. Writing this concept off just because it's a game can be dangerous because over time, people get used to it without really looking at the issue. It still involves money. Money that people work for. There is a principle well beyond Destiny. Laugh at that if you want...but I'm going to defend the base game people on this. Destiny is a great game but this is a questionable practice. If it wasn't a game. If it was a car.... a service.... whatever.... why would it be okay for people to act differently if the concept is the same?

  • The people trying to defend this game are really quite blind or make very bad defences as to WHY they should be able to get away with it
