I am impressed and intrigued by the current developments in Thorium Reactors which eliminate many of the downsides of Uranium/Plutonium fission (meltdown, waste, cooling, size, etc) and could easily provide power for a village or sectors of a town/small city.
I am extremely curious about Lockheed's work on a "fusion reactor that can fit on a flat-bed". http://aviationweek.com/technology/skunk-works-reveals-compact-fusion-reactor-details
For me the fear and arguments against fission are like those who are afraid of air travel. Though it is proven that both fission power and airline travel are many times safer and less impactful than other methods of power-generation/transportation, there are still risks and when an incident with them happens, it is going to be high-profile and strike people emotionally. Even though the alternatives (coal, oil, even solar for power and automobiles for travel) cause more pollution per mile/kwh and cause more loss of life per mile/kwh.
