It technically was made exactly as it is... But so is everything in a video game. The fact that the model is incomplete, and that the absence of geometry was unintended goes without saying.
i just noticed that in my profile model...you cant see it as much in the game but the 3d model looks unfinished
I don't think its possible that the artist who crafted our ship submitted it in that state... Its almost guaranteed that it was whole when they uploaded the final iteration.
The ships like most other models in destiny are constructed from a base set of geometry. There is most likely an entire subset of component geometry dedicated to the center section of ship hulls. Designers draw upon that ever expanding database of base geometry to piece together items in a way that speeds up production time.
Since every model doesn't require dedicated geometry we get a lot more ships... The downside is that any change to something in the database affects every model that utilizes that piece. So you have to be very conscious of what you are affecting when you make changes on such a fundamental level.
One possible reason for the "missing piece" is that the designer who created "birth of history" was drawing from a database that contains base geometry not yet released. Much of the other components that make up the ship are unique to it and bear a distinct similarity to the upcoming ships that will be released with the dark below. It could be that the specific component in question was left out from the recent download for whatever reason, and with the release of the dlc will be added to the public system.
I'm just trying highlight a possible upcoming source of complaint and scorn, and prevent it from happening. If the component subset that includes that piece is incomplete now, its possible that it may be incomplete when people start getting the other new ships... That circumstance would be unfortunate, especially since someone knew about it and decided to say nothing.
Much better to politely tap on the shoulder of a busy development team and point out something they don't have time to notice. Saves us useless threads made by ignorant people, and them scorn for something that is most likely a simple oversight.
Human error is inevitable, but if we watch each others backs we can create what we all hope for.
It was fine in the beta, the ship was my pride and joy. I got it after joining a game where my team was losing by over half:
