This irked me too, but jumping in in an area with a barrier exposes the painful truth - the barriers are there so you don't see how the world just stops, since bungie didn't want to make more than they needed to. I still wished they'd go easier on the barriers and just fill out those out-of-map blanks with simple geometry, covered in a flat texture-less shader. This would work so well on Mars, since sand from a distance doesn't need much. Sure, the screen would alternate between 2014 and 2004, but it would still be much better than having the game slap you for wanting to get a view of the world you're in.
