The trouble with THAT story is that it isn't open-ended enough for story expansions. Honestly, part of the story we got in the game is pretty badass, they just had absolutely shitty delivery. You find out about a giant faction of murderbots who are hyperintelligent (they can apparently render simulations of reality that are indistinguishable from reality), are capable of time-travel, and that apparently want to turn the solar system into part of a growing consciousness that they're trying to build out of the universe. Very formidable. You find out that they've discovered something that's so powerful that they're willing to take a position of worship to gain its favor, and it appears to be leading them to Mars. Given their other nefarious plans for the solar system, ignoring this potential source of new power could be fatal. You go to the Black Garden to confront their 'god.' The problem is, none of their characterization appears in the game. Instead, you head to Venus, see robots, and your ghost tells you to do some murdering. The bit about trying to convert the solar system into one of 'their machines' is alluded to, but there's no real explanation of what that means, so it just sounds anti-roboty. You're told that you need to get a gate lord's head to get to the Black Garden, and you know the Vex have something there that you're supposed to deal with, but they throw a new, completely unrelated faction at you, and it ends up being a distraction. The other bit is that nobody ever actually makes it clear how ANY of this is related to 'The Darkness.' The grimoire cards actually describe the Darkness as a subject that we have a lot of uncertainty about, and it isn't necessarily related to any one enemy faction. Unfortunately, the game seems to do the exact opposite, and they project certainty about the Darkness that's never given to the player, making it seem like we're inhabiting a world that makes sense to everyone but us. I don't think the plot is that bad, I just think that the delivery is terrible and potentially misleading, if the Grimoire cards are to be believed.

  • I recently posted that the story is lacking, However, I now think that f one were to go through the single-player campaign, and ignore as much multiplayer as possible, they might see what Bungie had in mind. So, the problem seems to be one of implementation--multiplayer and co-op disrupting the story. This is a shame since the story is worthwhile--it's just hard to see when one's attention is distracted with the thousand other things to do. One thing I can say without equivocation is,do not bother with Prima's guide; following it, IMO, will screw u up worse than anything! Word to the wise.

  • agreed its like the halo storylines done to the extreme with epic lore but not great narrative kinda sad it took a halo game with arguably weakest plot(relative to other halos) to deliver a damn good narrative in halo 4

  • There are references to the fallen fleeing the collapse of their civilization, there are (very well hidden) references that the cabal are either retreating or are at least afraid of something, and the fact that the vex make extensive use of trans-dimensional relocation (teleportation, time-travel, pocket dimensions) all lead to a feeling that everyone is trying to get the hell out of dodge and we're just a rest stop along the intergalactic highway. The only faction that seems to be related to the darkness directly is the hive. They have at least two gods (Crota and Oryx) one of which serves the other. Crota killed thousands of guardians on the moon last time he appeared and was the reason that the city put a moratorium on travel to the moon. The other god, Oryx, is only referenced but when your ghost investigates his shrine we learn that Oryx is a 'massive' presence located far beyond our system. What their relationship to the darkness is exactly is unknown, but I have doubts that all these factions fall under the same banner.

  • Agreed completely. I cant help but feel bad for the fallen and cabal. They don't seem truly evil, just trying to survive. - More so the fallen. there are times i feel bad killing them

  • Thank you for this post, most of the game hints at a decent plot that I didn't learn of til I was bored at work and read the grimoire.

  • You know, a lot of the comments about the story being bad would go away if you could just access the grimoire in game. Okay, yeah, sure, it would be better if the game actually took those grimoire moments and had them acted out in the game, but just being able to access it from my console without having to install an app or get on the computer would do wonders. Mass Effect did it, why can't Destiny.

  • mass effect also told a good story without needing the codex's just look at the lord of the rings thats actually only a small part of the lore and theres so much more epicness hidden in there but even without looking into the details you still get a damn good story but i do agree grimoire cards should be ingame
