I think you are thinking in terms of other MMO games, I know that the leveling may have been accelerated for the Beta but Bungie has already stated that they dont want you to feel like you have to grind to level your charecter. I am betting that by this time next week people will be raiding, how succesful they will be IDK. Its not really a matter of having no life, or not enjoying the story line, or misplaced priorities. You just have a large population of gamers that have the skill and free time to get through the game faster than you average casual gamer. I am not one of those people but I certainly don't begrudge their enthusiasm.

  • More free time playing games = less time spent living = less of a life. You're trying to give respect to those who will achieve world firsts, but honestly, there is none to give.

  • I could not disagree with you more. You are being far to judgemental. If someone decides to move to alaska go off the grid and live life on their own terms hunting and gathering. Is that a fulfilling life? what about an academic who devotes a large portion of their life to the pursuit of education. Is that a fulfilling or corect life? These two extreme examples may look at one another and say that person has wasted their life. When in truth they have lived in a way that has made them happy. At the end of the day they will both die and the world will move on they will someday in the future be forgotten. No more or less relevent than the heroine addict who spends his days in the pursuit of his next fix. From the perspective of the drug addict we are all doing it wrong. my point is dont waste your time trying to figure out how other people are living their lives wrong. Find a good balance in your own life based on your perspective of what is important, not what you think other people place value in.

Since when is the perspective of someone who lost control of their life(drug addict) a valid perspective? Realizations can be reached in both extreme examples you provided, from which information can be shared with the world. Their lives have meaning. A "life" is life not dominated by unnatural circumstances. Spending your days holed up In a room chatting with people a few blocks away through wifi playing games is not a life. That's just a fact.

  • And what about the person, who spends hours a day reading other peoples thoughts? is that a life? how about the person who devotes their whole life to making the best tasting food that they can make? is that a life? what about the person that devotes every waking minute to the pursuit of wealth? is that a life? How do you decide what is important for everyone?

All examples you provided fit my original example. These are human beings pursuing human ambitions, creativity, and striving to become and understand more about themselves and their world. I don't presume to know what's best for everyone. But when people decide to stop developing themselves is when they've settled. When you spend most of your day playing games or worse- gaming and smoking weed when you aren't, you've settled. And as the great philosopher jiddu krishnamurti has said: "when learning ceases, the mind has settled, and when you settle, you are in a state of decay." There are people out there that have been decaying for years. Those are the ones I'm critical of.

  • The day we are born. we are in a state of decay. why is it important to pusue human ambitions, creativity and understanding, and if not you than who decides what qualifies as a valid pursuit. one day we will all die. i challenge you to visit a cemetary and distinguish who has lived a worthwhile life and who has not. We all decide for ourselves what is important to us as an individual. We will certainly make mistakes and stumble at points in our lives but the choices are our own to make. not some overly judgmental philosopher. And certainly not some imaginary ideal that sociaty in general has dreamed up.

He's not overly judgmental. You don't understand his perspective and you don't understand mine. You're treating this as a personal attack, because if someone doesn't agree with your view, it must either be that I am wrong, or there that this is a grey area where nobody is wrong/right. You can't be wrong. God forbid people some people are squandering their lives away, we must never hold them or anyone to higher standards. No, humanity is fine the way it is, forgive me.

  • I have not taken it as a personal attack. I may be completely wrong. I have thoroughly enjoyed going back and forth with you about this topic. We will agree to disagree. I acknowledge that my opinion is probably of the minority (maybe not in these forums). As I stated earlier I am not one of these hard core gamers I am a little bit older than most, and I just do not have that much time to devote to the hobby. But I do not feel any remorse or guilt for the precious time that I have locked in a dark room playing games with strangers on WiFi.

  • I understand. I meant no offense. I believe everything is fine in moderation. And you spending a little time playing each day in no way warrants a post like mine. My critical nature is directed towards the sub thread OP, who spends most of his day doing this activity. I apologize for any rudeness and I wish you a good day, sir/madam.

  • So basically, because i moved away from my friends, and I spend my time gaming with them online and chatting to them, I have no life?

Depends how much of your time you spend doing it, obviously. Yeah, a life to kids is not what life really is. You'll figure that out in a decade or so.
