I get the feeling that 3D printing is going to kill the tabletop gaming industry eventually.

Hopefully tabletop gaming gets smart, and instead of selling actual figures (which they could still do), they sell 3D print schematics. SO for 10.00 or whatever price they want you can download and print a certain figure, and the overhead would be much cheaper having the ability to refrain from making actual physical copies, shipping, stocking on shelves, having stores, etc. They could have store fronts if they wanted to, with tables to play on and figures to sell, as well as 3D printers in store for people who don't have their own 3D printers. If the business model was done right, tabletop gaming could make a huge comeback, and be even more profitable for the companies. Imagine a video game that had a pre-order bonus of 3D printable models, or a console that hooked up to a 3D printer... instead of having a bust of a generic spartan in Halo, you could make a model of your fully customized spartan. This could not only be monetized, but the companies could make huge profits without having to charge a lot to the consumer.
of course, this is just a brainstorm, not a full business model workup, but it seems viable to me
Once someone buys a schematic, wouldn't they be able to leak that same schematic to everyone else for free? Just a question, but I do like the idea of businesses started an idea like that.

infinity blade 3 has it.

That's pretty awesome! Looks like I'm a little behind the times haha. I hope Destiny gets something like that!

just found out about it a few weeks ago it blows my mind, i must get a 3d printer :)

I know right? I've wanted one for a long time but they are too expensive right now. I saw a kit you can buy where you get the software and machinery parts but you have to build your own frame and put it together. It was a more cost effective way of getting one but the ratings said print quality wasn't amazing and still cost several hundred dollars. One day though... One day....

When resin printers & SLS printers become affordable (sub 1000) that will be a game changer for the model making industry.

Maybe once they drop in price. But as is, it's still cheaper to buy a tabletop set. Good quality printers are up in the thousands.

First thing I thought of when I saw this was Destiny Heroclix.

My god, that sounds amazing

Or greatly enhance it

I'm with you on greatly enhancing. I could never afford all the models required for a lot of the Tabletop games and if I paid a smaller amount of money to get all the figurines then I might actually get into it. Gaming of all kinds certainly is a luxury lol.
