• I think the true benefit of the "always online" is that there's going to be centralized servers an that is where the characters are going to be stored as well as where we play. This is going to prevent people from having hacked saves or copying someone else's save. It'll also stop other problems such as lag switches and other issues with player hosting.

  • Sleep walks in to the world of DRM So, everyone here remembers the X1 launch debacle and one of the main issues was the check-in every 24hrs (basically DRM). As such, if you can only play a game when connected to both the internet and company x servers; you are in effect verifying (DRM) that you are eligible to play as you have officially purchased the license to play the game. This makes the whole X1 debacle mute. This is a pro for software developers/publishing partners as they are reducing the chance of the game being pirated. This is a con for consumers. If your internet goes out, you can't play the story mode for the game because it needs company x servers (if that is how the story mode works i.e. destiny). If you live in a remote rural area were internet is mega expensive to get, or it's not available, then you can't play the game. Better internet infrastructure is required with ISP backup (if your connection goes down they can switch you over to another t1 line), and reasonable pricing all round. Then, this becomes a better option.

Guess what...Playstation Germany just had a competition for early access. Winners will be able to play the day before release. Don't actually know how that will work, since servers would have to be up, but I guess they'll manage.

      • The main problem is for Xbox 360 players and PS3 players, once online services are shut down for those consoles, then Destiny is almost useless

      • uh the real overlooked aspect here is that bungie can essentially update graphical models and render proficiency to update the game through its lifespan. Similarly to how WoW is patching over a few characters and making them high fidelity. I entire expect new and beauteous additions due to their very flexible system; really only possible through online only.

      •
Also the fact that the servers start when the game comes out means that everyone will start out on an even playing field. There won't be that guy who has the best gear and a high rank. Players start at the same time.
While I agree with most that you said, what I quoted is completely false. The game get released on 9/9 so that means that people that live closer to the international date line will get the game close to 1 day before others, so if the servers open at the international date line as well that means they will have had 1 day to play before everyone else. Also if you bought the digital pre-order, depending on where you live you will have to wait for your provider to release the digital licence. The fact of having to wait for the licence for the digital pre-order is cool but people playing close to 1 day before the rest of the world even gets there copy of the game is just wrong.

Destiny isn't a true single player game. It's a social type of game. Yea you can play it alone if you want to get your butt handed to you, go for it. But the game is about doing things as a Team. And don't even say you don't have friends. We all do. Bungie is aiming to bring back the idea of co-op to the four front. I like grabbing friends to kick ass together. I'm sure many do. So many old games did it back in the 90s.Co-op is coming back in a big way. Single player is fun but Co-op is way better.

While always online can have it's benefits (preventing save hacking and other exploitation). There are many more problems that it presents. If servers go down/are attacked by DDoS or possibly just die from the amount of players, no one will be able to actually play the game until the issue is fixed. That said, I already know that there are going to be days, where there will be server maintenance and people will rage because they can't even play the campaign until the maintenance is completed. Really, the way Bungie wants the game to work and the way they intend to support it is impossible to do without always online but, there are going to be issues and hopefully people understand this. The game is basically a console "MMO" so you're always going to be online, it's just how it is. There's no point in raging, always online also allows Bungie to constantly view statistics about players and will help relay data to them and help them constantly support it. Overall I'd say that support from Bungie will be the biggest plus. I've been playing MMO's for years, so maybe I'm just used to the concept but that's just me. So I guess to sum up my rambling, all I'm saying is there's no use getting butt-hurt over the fact that the game servers may go down or that the game is always online. The game is going to be well supported and I know that Bungie will be able to deliver the game we're all hoping it will be. Just think of the game as more of a "MMO" because that's what they're hoping it will be. If you continue to think of Destiny as a standard single player Console game, than you're going to be sadly disappointed.

Okay so let ME tell YOU something about this always online BS. First off, let's just go to the main issue before personal issues. The fact that you must be online which connects to a server means that the MOMENT Bungies servers stop supporting Destiny the game will be entirely useless...sure, they plan for 10 years, but let me say i've been playing games 20+ years old and i still have the physical copies. Now, imagine my anger if i try to play a game that is around 20 years old, and i can't even start the game up for singleplayer, which by the way is mainly what i play games for. Bottom line, anything relying on servers (aka online connectivity) for EVERYTHING in a game is just plain stupid. There should be at least an option to play offline, it isn't even that difficult to do. Okay okay, now enough of the issues about this, let me tell you all a little story that has to do with Steam vs Origin. Now many will probably say that Origin is shit and steam is best friend. Let me say that I agree...to a point. Sadly the difference between the two is massive in terms of offline capability. You see many probably don't know this because in modern day hardly anyone is offline for too long. Me however I had an issue were due to complications i couldn't connect to the internet on my desktop for over 4 months. In the end after i had everything set up i also bought an amazing wifi USB so i could connect, but before this i couldn't. Now everyone knows steam has offline capabilities...but like Starcraft you must login at least once per 30 days for it to be enabled. Now i forget about starcraft but for steam you must do it on the computer itself...if you login elsewhere it won't matter. So wouldn't you know my surprise when after 30 days of no internet i was locked out of steam from playing games. Origin on the other hand, luckily i had a bunch of games installed from there recent sale at the time and for 4 months i was playing on origin. This isn't even a small number of games either. The idea of online only has the assumption you WILL have access to internet within 24 hours. Bullshit, if i buy a game i want to play it whenever i want and wherever. Hell if i am in Australia in the middle of no where and have a generator i want to pump open my portable gaming case, plug it into my said generator and play my games without the "SORRY YOU MUST CONNECT TO THE INTERNET" tl;dr? Always-Online is one of the shittiest ideas anyone has ever come up with. Good day.

Thats it, thats your entire argument? "Always online prevents spoilers" Yeah spoilers really ruin a game that I cant play if: - ISP goes down - Game servers go down - Live/PSN servers go down - I cant buy Live/PS+ that month Most idiotic argument for always on ever.

              • Spoilers will never go away with the web the way it is nowdays. There are just too many people out there with too much time on their hands. They sit around and datamine every piece of information they can get their hands on. Then they post it all over the place hoping people will throw them a youtube sub or a facebook follow. Honestly I am surprised Bungie has been able to keep any part of Destiny a secret.

              • Okay so my internet is trash. Cant even play online in Watch Dogs. But. It still seems to be better on my Xbox one. So, when the beta released i downloaded it (took forever of course). I actually started playing and at this point i was screaming like a little panzy-girl and nearly pissed my pants. Finished the first mission and guess what.... i was alone. The only guardian at the tower. I was confused because i had good enough connection to play it, but not enough for others to join. The whole "must be online to play" kind of messed with my head. I was just happy to be playing though. So now i will have to play the entire game solo, which is fine. But this means i will not be able to participate in raids. And this makes me very sad :( why am i telling you guys this story? Idk. I just felt like explaining my unfortunate situation. Im pretty bummed about it. But on the bright side, no one will be able to take my kills in explore mode!

              • There is also the daily new content they will be giving through their servers for the next 10 years and you will need an online connection for that as well. (still, DRM has its severe risks, look at gamespy and the games affected by its shutdown!)

              • I agree, I like the online only feature, it makes it like an MMO and MMOs usually have a TONE of content that'll keep you going for years. Now I doubt that vanilla Destiny will keep us entertained for years but I hope it will keep us entertained for a long time, enough for the next game to come out.
