Destiny has already been discovered by thousands of people who enjoyed the first part of the beta on PS4 and PS3. Today, the beta will resume on all four major console platforms.
Players who haven't gotten a chance to play Destiny yet will notice you can only talk to those you have joined a Fireteam with. David Dague, who is a community manager at Bungie, talked about why Destiny players can only talk to people in their fire team when competing at The Crucible.
"We want to make sure your level of social engagement in Destiny is something that you have complete and total control over. We want you to make very deliberate decisions about the people you're going to have on your team, and the voices that you welcome into your audio mix.
"We've made a lot of games over the years that have brought a lot of gamers together in social and violent [encounters]. We found that people who know each other and trust each other tend to make the best contributions to the party. I can certainly remember playing Bungie games online and other people would use their access of being able to talk to me as an opportunity to incite grief or bully me, [so that's why we did that]," Dague said.
This is a nice move by Bungie because not everyone wants to hear a screaming 11 year-old while they're playing with their friends. Some other games could take a cue from Destiny in this regard. The Destiny beta opens back up today and this time it's for all four major consoles platforms.
Bungie will close the beta this coming Sunday and then that will be it until the Sept. 9. Some betas have been extended over the day they originally planned to end it, but it would be a surprise to see Destiny do this. Stick around as we'll have all the major details on the game leading up to, at and post launch.

Okay, so I understand the point of no one wants to hear barking dogs, rap music, yelling, but I've always stood behind optional mic chatting. That OR a certain part or entire part of the tower allows players to chat. Why do I find this so necessary instead of just having chat in a fireteam? Say I'm recruiting for raids (most likely), I don't want to either message a ton of people if they have mics, or join their fireteam only to find they don't have mics and can't communicate. Yes, I'm part of a clan, but destiny's beta had no option to join online clan members -- another feature that should be implemented.

"We've seen the feedback, and there's quite a bit of ongoing discussion happening around this right now," reads an update from community manager Eric "urk" Osborne over at IGN. "I don't have a definitive decision, but I can say that the team wanted to err on the side of promoting and fostering positive communications between strangers in the world, and knew that friends were going to find simple and effective ways to enable voice chat with friends through the Fireteam audio channel, and platform chat. "We hear you, though. Please keep sounding off with feedback. We're just getting started!"

there cannot be positive communication between strangers if there is no communication between strangers
-
There is communication. It is Fireteam only. Additionally, there are non-verbal ways to communicate. The way it was in the beta was an "opt-in" system rather than an "opt-out."

yes because pointing at nothing, waving like an idiot, sitting down and dancing will help with co-ordination in the world events... also its much more work to start a party and invite every one in the area to it and then repeat the process once you move to a new area if you want to chat then it would be to disable the chat feature once if you didnt want to chat....

The Fireteam invite/request to join worked pretty good. It kept the interactions game related and I didn't have to hear a bunch of nonsense. I don't understand why having to hear everyone by default is a good thing. Your complaint is that there "is no communication" and that is simply false. It's there. It's not just handed to you and no one is forced into it. It's completely optional and requires the individual to 'yes' to it and then take action to be involved in it. There are situations where it may need to be improved; a "Public Event Chat: On/Off" might be a good idea. It would also allow full Fireteams to join a Public event with randoms, communicate with randoms during the event, then retain their Fireteam settings afterwards. http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/68581879/0/0/1

prox chat would also help in these situations, calling out chest so that every one can share in the loot, requesting help from strangers so that you can take down a large enemy, helping with navigation (seeing as there is no maps in the future) making more then 1 friend a day (specially considering one of the main selling points of the game is that its supposed to be a SOCIAL shared world shooter) i dont see why your against the thought of a system that can be toggled off for people who dont want it. "i dont want it so its a bad idea regardless of weather or not i can turn it off" is an ignorant and selfish stance on the idea.

My experience was one that was more social than in any other multiplayer game I've ever played. It was also significantly more positive and entirely game related. I don't think Bungie's way should be scraped; it would benefit from some added features like the ones in that link I posted. This one game does the chat system differently than all the others and I, and those like me, like it. In every other game I am in the habit of very quickly muting all and in this one I didn't. Not once have I said that others shouldn't have anything. I simply think that the chat system in the beta was the best one I have ever used. Clearly Bungie put a lot of thought in to it. I don't want it to function like every other game's but if it gets changed to an 'always on by default' type system; I'll give it a brief chance and then go back to muting everyone like I am used to doing.

but if we wana communicate with a stranger we gotta do all that stupid start a fire team reset stuff, and then talk to them only to find out they are annoying or whatever... i know no one on ps4, this is why im so pissed off at this mess

I had my Fireteam set to Public. I sent no invites/requests. I met, played with, and was friended by at least 1 player per day of the beta(in a year of GTAO I met/became friends with 5 players). All while simply playing the game. These players were there to play the game; exactly the kind of people I want to play with. I think having it set up the way they did contributed to that. If there is a place where public/proximity chat is 'missing' that place is the Tower. It's the Social center of the game; everywhere else was a mission. http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/68581879/0/0/1
