Sexism is the same as homophobia or racism. You don't understand it because you've never had to--it doesn't directly affect you. Sexism in gaming is rampant and I can't stand it anymore. Same goes for casual racism. It's totally rampant and your sheltered privileged view prevents it from making a noticable impact on you, meanwhile you soak it up like a sponge.
