Subclasses and skills....nah it's just a shooter

So I'll admit to having a little more preference for ability-casting than pure gun-shooting, so naturally I'm a bit disappointed that Destiny is 90% shooter and only tentatively dabbling in subclasses and skills, but I understand. That's its roots and its core player base. But it annoys me a little when it can't seem to admit that. I find the talk of "roles" in raids hard to believe when I have one skill, one grenade skill, and a gun. But we have subclasses! Well, two. So technically if everyone in your raid played different character/subclass combinations, you would have JUST enough to technically be different. But otherwise somebody is a duplicate. Fine, fine, it's a gun game, differentiate your role by what you do with that gun rather than by any character skills. But even if I've got only one ability and a grenade and a gun, at least subclasses can differentiate a little, right? Except there are only two.
Squishie1984 Can you tell us about the possibility of another class/subclass? You have yet to maximize your first sub-class. We have yet to even let you try a second one. Ask us again once you have mastered the six classes that you’ll have access to in Destiny, and we’ll show what we learned while we watched you do it.
Well, this post from the recent Mail Sack berates us for complaining that there are only two, except that the rest of the time Destiny is trying to tell me how vested I'm going to get in my character for the next 10 years, etc etc.....ok, so I picked a character class to stick with for 10 years, so now I only have 2 subclasses. Those others don't matter, I'm only playing one character. I only have two abilities to choose between. Don't get me wrong, Destiny will be great fun from what I've seen, but it's just a shooter and I'll have to keep reminding myself of that. Until my character has more than two abilities/skills to choose between, Destiny is going to have a hard time convincing me otherwise. That's not bad or even unexpected, it's just not a whole lot of character progression or diversity.

TLDR : just another "quantity over quality" guy It's better to ensure the quality of the game at launch than have a shit ton of classes weapons etc. that will end up bogging it down later on balance wise among other reasons

    • I think there's a little bit more to the characters than that. First off everyone is going to have their own gear build that boosts their stats the way they like. Second there is the core stats around each class, everyone knows titans are ultra tanky, hunters are super fast and warlocks are... Well they're warlocks. That on top of the special grenades, special melees and super ability of your choice adds a good bit of diversity in my opinion and that is just the start. Plenty more content down the road.

      • OP, as you said yourself, 10 years for a character. New content is going through March next year. There is likely a whole year between then and Destiny 2. No idea what is coming next. Maybe character evolution. If you plan to stick around for 10 years, then you have to look at this as just the beginning of the journey. Hopefully lots to discover along the way.

        • When you think how each subclass is tied to one element its reasonable to think each class has one more sub (prob released in some form of dlc). As it stands titan: void and arc, hunter: arc and solar, warlock: solar and void.

          • You do realize you can switch your subclasses? Say you have Two Titans both with Defender. One of you can switch to Striker just for the raid.

            • I hear where you are coming from mate. I big into MMORPG and if that the point you coming from I get it. Something you hit right it's a shooter. Everything in the game is based around being a shooter so how they did classes and stats was based on that. I made a 5 part post about raiding speculations to my clan for people not familiar with raiding. I am not going to post all the details but maybe give you some things to think about. First there are roles in the game, but they are more based on the action side. Defender - defensive support Sunsinger - offensive support Gunslinger - single target damager Blade Dancer - melee horde damager Striker - hybrid horde damager VoidWalker- Ranged horde damager But defining your role don't stop their. Equipping different traits allow you to focus on certain things more. Picking to focus armor, recovery, or agility will affect play style more. Picking what exotics you wear will define your class more and what you are able to do. Gear and weapons in general will portray your role in group from the type of weapons you use to the traits on the gear and weapons. Then you have intelligence, discipline, and strength. You need to try to balance these stats out to get the most out of your build. So what Bungie did since they built a shooter first, they made using stats, traits and weapons as a way of creating a build or role. If you look at all the details they really blend together forming true synergies. It's all about options. If you are worried at cool down of supers, that is where orbs of light become useful. In raids you might be using supers more often then you think. I don't know if this gives you any hope but I hope I got you to think about a few things.

            • Its foolish to believe that there will only be a total of 6 subclasses and 3 base classes in the entirety of the franchise for the next 10 years. Bungie prolly realizes that that will get incredibly boring. Monotonous. Repetitive. Please avail your worries now. What they are saying is that people need to stop complaining that the beta didnt have more content. Cause it had a -blam!- ton.
