All for nothing... *updated*

So I've been preparing for destiny just as hard as the next guy, took off a week of paid vacation, remodeling my basement so I could have a man cave by 9/9, bought a new headset, and was even planning on replacing my ps4's HD for recording purposes. Yesterday I went to the doctors because I jammed my left thumb playing basketball earlier this week, and I found out I broke my thumb and need surgery on Tuesday to put the bone back together. I will have a thumb cast on for 4 weeks and will be unable to pick up the sticks until then, and then it depends on how successfully they get the pins out, whether I can play or not. I realize I will probably get hate for this post, but I'm extremely butt hurt and wanted to share my story. Although I won't be able to join for a few weeks, good luck to all you gaurdians who will be playing at launch, leave me some fallen scum to obliterate though! Edit/Update: I got home from work and decided to try and test ways to play without my thumb. Tyler12400 mentioned playing claw, which I instantly dismissed, due to preconceived notions that it still needed the use of 2 thumbs. I found out I was wrong, and after I'm done watching Divergent with my girlfriend, I'm going to try out using claw in Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. I will update later or tomorrow morning, thank you everyone for your kind words and encouragement. 2nd Edit/Update: Tried playing claw while trying out PVZ, the drop in performance was expected but it was a little uncomfortable on the thumb and my index finger as well. Does any one else use the claw setup? If so, does it hurt regularly or is it because mine is busted? 3rd and final Edit/Update: Been almost a week since surgery, but I've been too jacked up on pain pills to make a comprehensive update. Surgery went along with no hiccups, except there was a part of the surgery I didn't anticipate. I didn't realize how large the pins are that they put in my hand and one of them reaches all the way to my index finger. The doctor emphasized that I not attempt to play video games, as I had shown him the claw grip wondering if it would be ok (I guess the strain it puts on the hand could break the pin). There may not seem like a reason for this update but I just wanted to thank everyone for the encouragement and kind words, I should be able to join the fight 2 weeks and a day after launch but until then good luck to everyone else, and enjoy this game changing product bungie is putting out!

There are one-handed controllers. And there's the XIM, for mouse and keyboard controls.

Sorry to hear about your thumb. That truly sucks. Hopefully my story will help you out a little. One month and 11 days before the PS3 launch I was in a car accident. I was the passenger in the vehicle and some idiot made an illegal left turn and hit the car I was in head on. I had a lot of injury's, but the big one was a lower trunk brachial plexus injury. In non-medical speak that means nerve damage in my shoulder that made my right hand go completely dead. (seatbelt broke ribs, broken ribs stabbed nerve, hand no worky any more). Needless to say I was pretty devastated. But I rested up and started to heal. A month went by and although my hand was still totally useless I got my ps3 and I played the hell out of it. I found a way to hold the controller against my body and mash the buttons with Stupid Hand (that is what I call my hand post nerve damage) and I was able to find a way to play. It wasn't easy at first and i got very impatient. "I used to be good, and now I suck" played like a record in my head. But I stuck with it and figured out a way to play that worked for me and eventually got better. It's been years now and I have had several surgeries on my hand. It will never be like it was. (pic was taken today) Alas forever Stupid Hand. But I still game avidly and I am still finding better and better ways to compensate for my disability. Sorry this dragged on a bit. The moral of the story is if you love gaming, you will find a way to game around your injury. Even if your thumb never returns to normal. See you in the wild Guardian

    • I remember breaking my right hand's middle, ring, index fingers and thumb 2 days before a 1000$ reward game on GameBattles.

      • How about one of these so you could use your whole hand to operate the joystick. This would also be great for equipment operators.

1 guy I knew he played a game without using his other hand due to it getting hurt too. He simply sniped a lot & still did decent. I've also heard of 1 handed gaming controllers.

      • If anyone on here plays PvZ on the ps4, and wants to put performance aside to help me with learning claw grip, request me. My Psn is pproblematix, I would just join online games, but people are assholes even on a simple game like this. I don't currently have a functioning mic, but I'm realistically just looking for a few people to play with that won't rage because I'm getting used to this grip and it's tough.

That suks :( if an accident happens the fingers are the worst place for a gamer. Let's hope for a quick recover, Shouldn't take that long in the hand to grow the bone back enough to move around a bit without having the whole hand wrapped up in stuff.

        • Just invert the controls and hold the controller upside down, use your thumb for the trigger

        • My only thought is if they have mouse/keyboard support at launch. Depending on which thumb it is you'll either not need it or will only need it for the spacebar to jump

        • Unfortunate turn of events, but hey, fate says you are not meant to play just yet, be patient, your time will come.

          • I know what you're going through. As a kid I've needed IV's every few months, which meant I couldn't use my entire arm for anything (Chronic disease for which I need it + phobia which somehow stiffens my entire arm). And this was right when Kingdom Hearts 2 was released, so I couldn't play it for a month. Technically... I've somehow learned myself to play with one hand and eventually use my feet when I'd need to. It does help that my fingers are longer than average but still, not an easy task. For an FPS it's harder to do though. I'd suggest just doing in the game what you can. You'll get used to it for sure. Just be sure to take breaks often so your good hand wont get overworked. And just be patient with it, it'll heal.

some do for competitive reasons in the past and currently actually. Claw is similar for most games but has some differences that all depends on you. I would suggest jumper its a lot simpler and more comfortable to use. In a lot of ways its a lot more convenient then other control settings.

              • If you still have full motion over the other fingers in that hand, you may still be in business. Also, depends on which controller you are using for ease of use.
