The below is from one of my posts advocating against split screen.
Ok, for all of you who want split screen in this game, I'm going to reason to you that it should not be in this game. First of all, it's an RPG as well as an fps. Very few RPG's so have split screen, and if they do it is usually in campaign offline. There is a reason for this. If a guest were to just jump on a friends console, how would the game decide what level and gear they will get to play with? The game cannot just spawn them in the world with any gear because they didn't earned it. Same goes for levels. I cannot think of an mmo/online RPG that allows guests to play (if you know one that allows online guests Please let me know) .Also, if you by chance are playing split screen with someone who has an online account, what happens if you two aren't the same level? With split screen, you would have to both be on the same planet at once fighting the same level range of enemies. If one person is under-leveled/geared, they won't have the best play experience. The main problem is the gear/leveling system that wouldn't work with splitscreening guests. Also the console will be overworked having two players instead of one. Also, not all shooters have split screen (bf4)
• To debunk your "how would it determine level for a guest?" theory, they'd just have to do what most games do for online local co-op, the partner has to have an active Gold Account (not sure about PSN) in order to play with you. As for your concern about both players having to be on the same planet, that's the whole point of split screen. Concerning the RNG and difficulty, the hardest levels of a zone don't scale with the player so they'd only be as difficult as the highest setting for the mission/strike/raid and the RNG is already bunk as hell with its drops. It could easily be based off of a "last hit" basis or drop the same engram but give a different item depending on level. None of your arguments really apply that well to Destiny, since it's more or less a merger of Halo and Borderlands, both of which handled local online co-op pretty well.

Borderlands. RPG. Splitscreen. Online. and it works out perfectly. I think that splitscreen should at least be an option, it's too expensive to pull a move like not being able to Splitscreen. Me and my husband love this game but would get more enjoyment playing it together than having to take turns. I really hope they add this option. (I know this is an older post but I had to see the conversations on these topics lol)

  • But it could be a separate account meaning they would have to earn it

  • Diablo did it. Granted they made it so you had to share the screen, but that's a different type of game, and Lego Marvel, was able to eliminate the need to share a screen. If you're not a dev, don't tell me it can't be done, I don't care what your hunch is. I would be happy if it dropped everything according to player 1's stats, as long as player 2 gets glimmer and xp, they'll catch up, and not be wasting their time. Any couch coop is better than none, but I agree, it's a shot in the dark.
