Alright you gave me the chance so I'll take it. *pulls out corncob pipe and sits in rocker*.
Well it was 2001 and I was in that awkward stage of realizing my life had and was continuing to make drastic turns. Caught between wanting to grow up but not quite ready to let go of being a child.
It was closing in on the holiday season and there was a new box coming to a retailer near you! It was going to be the most powerful gaming machine ever conceived! Sure there was the PS2 but come on everyone had a PS2. This machine was bold, daring, new and fresh. It was from a company that had been in the software side of business. Could they pull off a gaming machine? Would it be better than the less expensive GameCube that was coming from a company that new both gaming hardware and software? I couldn't care less, this machine was powerful! That's all I cared about.
I took a chance with the lesser known company. The box was like a suitcase full off brick and the controller was the size of a lunch tray at school. The only game I remember playing early on was Odd World: Munche's Oddysee. It was interesting at the time. Then came a game that made me realize that the machine I took a chance on was worth the risk. Halo:CE! I will never forget the awe of playing that beauty for the first time. That ring world was enigmatic, strange, dangerous and inviting all at the same time. Driving down the beach or freaking out in the lush jungles wondering where the enemy was at, it all seemed so, so invigorating!
I will always cherish that first Bungie experience for more reasons than just the game itself but it was definitely a moment in my gaming life that raised the bar forever more.
