The servers will be active ahead of release, theres precautions already in place to stop people playing ahead of time without authorization (fines to stores etc.) There are always people who get legit early copies of games (employees, journalists, youtubers) and they need to be accessible, Bungie or more precisely activision isnt going to hold the servers hostage. They will be up days before release, like other online check in games.
Theoretically ig you could convince your console you were on the east coast, west coast players could be playing digital copies at 9pm. Just not sure if it goes by user entered data or ip address

What is stopping the PS users who pre downloaded on 9/7 from playing when the servers become "active ahead of release"?
-
The game isnt made active until midnight. Theres plenty of games that you can preload that dont run off servers at all but we dont question how thats possible.

Ah, ty for clearing that up. I don't get my PS4 for a few more days so I had no idea. I like the idea of playing right at 12am without driving/standing in line/downloading. Sounds good to me!

Its something that should have always been possible. Digital sales need something to give them a boost, they should have always been a few bucks cheaper since theres no disk and they should always be available at modnight. This is one thing the pc gamers got right. I dont like drm as I imagine most pc gamers but make something cheaper and more convienant and you never know what people will do.

The buy back on games is ridiculous too. With lil ones that have been known to scratch a disc or two, there is no reason not to buy digital for me.

it goes by ip address i have tried this in past midnight releases
