If you are in a close-to-mid-range, head-to-head duel with an auto rifle---and you aren't carrying one----you are dying because you made a tactical mistake.
Not because the AR is over-powered.
The AR is SUPPOSED to dominate at close range...and have an advantage at mid-range. The reason why (good) players have concerns about the AR is because the Shingen (and to a lesser extent the Cydonia) have very little recoil. Which makes them unrealistically accurate at LONG range.
If you are running with a Scout Rifle, then you need to stay OUT of "duels" with players running with automatic rifles. You want to pull back to mid-to-long range, and look to FLANK your opponent. So that you get the drop on him...and put one or two shots on him before he can figure out where he's taking fire from. The Scout Rilfe is not for rushing around the map with ala CoD "quick scoping" or the Halo DMR. You're going to get handed your head that way. You want see this weapon as a mid-to-short-long-rangel SNIPER rifle. Sort of like the Longbow-DMR in Titanfall.

At mid range however, the auto rifle should not be landing every shot, and a scout rifle should be able to strafe and win. Bungie said this is about the size of most maps, so where are you going to find longer range encounters?
-
Not in a head-on engagement, unless you have good luck of going up a player whom you are significantly better than. A good play will simply follow you with their fire. The more you try to juke and strafe to avoid their fire the less accurate yours will be. The win always goes to whoever can put up the greatest volume of ACCURATE fire. A well-balanced burst-fire/pulse fire weapon is the weapon that should dominate these mid-range engagements, but since Destiny didn't have one in the beta, the ARs did.
-
Well the thing is that the AR covers the most possible uses in the Crucible maps we have seen. They should be nerfed so that they don't dominate so many types of engagements. If the scout rifle is only useful at sniper rifle range, then everyone will just use an AR and a sniper. The point is that the niches of each weapon are not equally balanced. Even those who prefer a precise playstyle often use the AR because they can still scope in and get headshots at mid-range.

To put it bluntly....you can't POSSIBLY know that. All you've seen at this point (unless you work for Bungie) are four maps----three of which were specifically designed to promote close-quarters fights----and ONE play mode. A play mode (Hardpoint) that is also designed to promote close-quarters fights. j The ARs and SRs are balanced. You are just determined to try to play the SR in an unrealistic manner that SOME FPS allow you to get away with...but THIS ONE won't. IN real combat, if you are in a stand-up, face-fo-face firefight at 100 or 150 yds against someone with a automatic rifle...and you're armed with a single shot one. You're going to go home in box. Your advantage is at 300 or 400 yds, and in catching the guy with the auto rifle unawares....and putting him down before he can draw a bead on you. To Bungie's credit, they've programmed the weapons to reflect that reality. Now, if you want to engage in close-to-mid-range fights in Destiny...then you're going to need to equip and auto-firing weapon. If you want to play with a single shot weapon, then you either need to back off to longer range and/or work at trying move around in order to get the drop on your enemy. Get in their face and try to "out-twitch/react them"...and they'll shoot you full of holes if they've got an AR. ...and it won't be because the ARs "OP". Its because you're using YOUR weapon in a foolish manner.
-
No, Bungie stated that most maps will be like this. In which case there aren't enough ways in which you can use the SR effectively where an AR wouldn't be just as effective. The game mode is irrelevant since encounters are generally the same across game modes when away from control points. Outdoors there aren't many lines of sight where a sniper wouldn't be more effective.
-
"Like this" in terms of size perhaps...but that you also have to account for the fact that this is NOT CoD or BF. They are building quite a bit of *verticality* into even the smaller maps. So the only way to create distance isn't by going BACK...you can do it by going UP. Also, a sniper rifle is NOT a primary weapon. So you will have a hard time finding enough ammunition for a sniper rifle to try to make it play as one.
-
Another big point is the rate of fire. Now it's fine that they're that fast, but precision of each shot is too close to the previous. This full auto fire and in the crucible whoever gets the hits first win. Plain and simple, this mode is just the reflex and skill basis, no damage exceeding over another. So an auto rifle can tear down your shield VERY QUICKLY. At the point a headshot does you in, ITS TOO FAST ESPECIALLY FOR ITS RANGE.

The reason why (good) players have concerns about the AR is because the Shingen (and to a lesser extent the Cydonia) have very little recoil. Which makes them unrealistically accurate at LONG range.[/quote] So technically speaking you do see that they're too optimal. Look at the pulse rifle, does anyone use it in crucible? I've played several hours on PvP and if your a iron banner status your gonna see A LOT of auto rifle kills on the feed. People have adapted to it because they feel that pulse can't stand a chance, let alone handle mid range which I think they bridge the gap between scout and auto. Auto should be missing shots the size of a barn firing full auto at mid range. That's if holdin the trigger down start to finish. Believe me ppl can literally just do that. Rinse and repeat.

In reverse. At mid-range? No. But they should have a recoil pattern at LONG-range that is more like what you see with the Pulse rifle has at mid-range. But there are automatic assault rifles out there that don't kick like mules, and are quite accurate out to a couple hundred yards. But the recoil on the Shigen and Cydonia are unrealistically low, which allows unrealistically accurate fire out to long ranges. Which is why I've argued that---the Shigen especially---either needs to have its fire rate reduced, or needs to recoil more. The Pulse Rifle is just a LOUSY weapon as it is right now. It recoils FAR too much for a burst-fire weapon (you literally have to aim below your target and to the right to allow for the muzzle climb so you can actually hit your target), AND its impact is too low relative to its rate of fire. So you get outclassed at close-and-mid range by ARs, and you get outclassed at mid-and-long range by SRs. So you die....A LOT. But the close-to-mid-range performance of the ARs I don't have a problem with. AT THAT range, automatic firing weapons SHOULD have a powerful advantage over single-shot weapons. So the guy playing with a single-shot rifle needs to STAY OUT of that range, and pick off people at long range. You saw so many poeople in the Crucible running with ARs because the Shingen and Cydonia were unrealistically accurate, even at long range....AND the majority of the maps encouraged/favored close-to-mid-range engagments. (Rusted Lands, as well as the ones on Mars and Venus)

The problem is that most of the maps will be this size. That means that the AR needs a nerf to its range game, because the scout rifle is completely worthless on these types of maps.
-
Only if you are playing control or domination.

Idk if the map encourage. There's plenty of avenues leading to points that you can look down and take out targets before reaching the point. I just think that everyone adapted their tactics to rushing the points. But still the auto rifle could work in any situation.
