Yeah, id have to agree with the majority feeling on why this isn't a big issue. It's because social chat is incredibly finicky, it's not something that is conducive to the world and gameplay, if one wants to encourage the social feeling they should commit to friending others, I had wonderful mic-less interactions with plays who I later friended and then was able to chat with, the method allows players to filter what they'd like to hear without the horrifying chore of needing to mute everyone awful they come across, which news flash, is going to be a whole lot of people. The community is not at a place where proximity social chat would not play out awfully and become bungie's biggest issue. Putting the function in and allowing people to opt out would also be completely ridiculous as it'd form a bigger barrier between players with their heads together, those that are incredibly naive, and those who will abuse the system. Bungie played their cards right and considered everything IMO, I'm so glad I will be able to enjoy a game uninterrupted by nuisances and be able to opt into speaking with those who I'd like to.

I can appreciate that argument. It's nice to hear someone articulate their thoughts without vitriol and condescending remarks against another's opinion.

Aha I do try to not be awful...we disagree sometimes

Shut your mouth you idiot! That's what I usually get or something of that venom. Lol. You threw me off! Haha

I'm sorry that's been your experience. This community has a lot of new members and I'm not sure it's found a way to feel like a family yet...I'm sure things will get better!

New to forums in general so I'm not used to the "keyboard tough guy"

Nice to see that someone actually thought about it more than just "I don't want it so you can't have it because I'm a dick" which is most of the arguments here from those opposing prox chat. I don't understand the argument though; how would it form a barrier? There are lone wolves and those with a group of friends playing already, they could and probably would continue to be alone / talk with their friends only. Giving them, and the people who don't fit the 2 categories, the option to use a proxy chat would only amount to more interaction possibilities between those willing. A few times during the Beta I would have payed real money if I could have talked to the randoms in my area who were doing a public event with me - it was going horribly because they didn't know the actual objective of it.
-
The barrier comes from the idea that some people will absolutely opt out if prox chat. As people opt out those that still use it will be in a compromised and almost useless system.
-
That is going on the assumption that most people will opt out. I think it's pretty split down the middle based on what I'm reading in the forums.
-
Compromised by what? I disagree with it being almost useless as well. Those who aren't completely opposed to the idea but usually play alone also have the chance to use it too if they so choose. I just don't see why giving people more interaction options is bad.
-
See I just felt that not being able to talk to everyone would ruin the point of prox chat, you hop into a mission and are trying to communicate only to find that person has muted everyone. However seeing that you would still enjoy that functionality despite a limited pool of users; I wasn't for it so I only assumed, seeing as support would be desirable regardless of a limited usage, well how could I disagree to prox chat being implemented if there was an opt out list that allowed both sides of the idea to be appeased~

^_^ I'm glad you're not one of the haters who are opposed it just because they don't want it and are willing to consider different options. It's not like it would be active in missions or anything because you don't matchmake there... mostly want it for Exploration and maybe Tower. I don't know if, in the full game, you can talk to people when you matchmake into Strikes

Nice to see so many objections to proximity chat in this thread. I thought I was in the extreme minority. In a perfect world this wouldn't be an issue. People would help each other and be polite and friendly. We all know that in this world you would be muting at least 85% of the players you run into for one reason or another. I do hope that Bungie figures out a way to add more emotes though. To limited as it is.

Emotes and signal choices could add a wonderful layer to the game. I posted a little back about wanted to see what all this glimmer farming hype was about and I started doing runs in rocket yard, eventually I got on a pike to speed things up, and found another player had started following my route, we slowly worked out a system where we would shoot once if we found no loot in a cave, the interaction was something really special, it turned my very boring farming task into a friendship, and it was a clear reason why I'm so excited for this game. To think if emotes were given a deeper meaning so that people could start to communicate in a basic form, the friendships forged would be that much more special. Think about dark souls, people drop items that make ridiculous sounds to simply say hello, it's hilarious, but it becomes a deep and beautiful facet of a games social abilities.
