Compared to that, New Vegas is a much better RPG. It has a more thought out setting, better writing, better characters and companions with more depth, a better reputation system, better gameplay, and a better feeling of choice and consequence. And in a role-playing game, those things matter.
Technically, it was a mess, but I'll cut Obsidian some slack. They did have a ridiculously short development time of less than 2 years, meaning a lot of stuff got cut and not nearly enough time was present for bug testing. And they were working with Bethesda's notoriously buggy and unstable GameByro engine.
New Vegas was just as buggy as Fallout 3. And a better story? Please. And you can't even compare Fallout 1 & 2 with 3 or New Vegas because they're a completely different style of RPG.

I only criticized your assertion that Obsidian "couldn't handle Fallout" by pointing out that some of the New Vegas devs also worked on the original Fallout games (and it shows). So how can they not handle their own series?
Meanwhile, the people at Bethesda had nobody who worked on the original Fallout games work on Fallout 3, and it shows.
