Proximity chat in Tower or any other hub would be downright ridiculous. I remember seeing a thread advocating for the implementation of a text-chat function, and I remember being shocked at all the negative responses. If the hub is supposed to function as a socialization center, then each player needs to have methods by which they can communicate with people around them. They may have questions that need asked/answered. Not everyone has a USB keyboard, and not everyone has a workable microphone. Therefore I say make both options available to all players, and have them be just that--options.

Hmmm i disagree with having any kind of text-chat to slow with contrllers and very few have keyboards every PlayStation comes with a headset. Also it becomes a screen clutter.I can see a option to have it displayed or off.Ultimately i say NO to a text based system. In the heat of battle during a PvP game you don't have time to text out call-outs that would be a step backwards having a text based system.-AND NOT HAVING ANY ABLITY TO VOICE CHAT IN PVP IS UNHEARD OF. A full fledged chat system for PvP,PvE,Tower,Strikes,Story, explore etc..with mute options voice chat can be turned on or off with different options. There has to be communication with players not just those on your fireteam.

How about text chat for your clan, all of them. You can't meet up with them all. You can't talk to them all. Text chat has its place in the game. Just saying " I found something! " to anybody is a chore. I picked up a wireless KB for $15. It works.

  • I didn't necessarily mean a text-chat for every zone so much as just for the social areas to aid in making groups or communicating with strangers. As for screen clutter, there's a very simple option to limit that. "Maximum/minimum number of lines displayed" would accommodate everyone, from those who don't wish to see chat at all to those who would go so far as to sacrifice half their screen to see chat. As for PvP I'd say that would be more of a step forward than backwards in my eyes. I mean, obviously a microphone is naturally superior to a keyboard in that it's quicker and less cumbersome to communicate with, but that goes back to my "not everyone has a microphone" statement. Of course you could counter that with "buy a microphone" but that wouldn't be fun debate now would it? Lol. I can't even count the number of times I've been killed by a camper in FPS games, not had my headset plugged in, and wished I had a method of informing my team of that a-hole's position. If I were to find myself in a similar situation in Destiny, just killed by a corner-camping, shotgun-wielding Titan, it would be nice to be able to at least type out that there's a camper on Point A so that my team has a chance of seeing my "callout." I am not, in any way, advocating the implementation of text chat within the Crucible... Just attempting to illustrate that, with the right options available, it wouldn't be a hindrance. That said, I agree with you for the most part. It irked me to no end when I searched for the Devil's Lair with just one friend and the third person couldn't voice chat with us (or maybe he could, he didn't, and I'm ignorant?) unless he joined our Fireteam, despite us being in the same Strike instance. 1

  • ***EVERY PlayStation 4 COMES WITH A MIC*** . I've competitive Gamed for Countless years headsets and communication through those means are like having a controller.By the time you text where i'm located my team of vets have already setup a spawn trap on you.Now if you had voice communication you could maybe have a chance against a team such as mine. You starting to see my point?

  • Nah bro, I saw your point to begin with and it was a pretty decent one, though overlooking a few key details such as that mics can break. I already ceded that voice communication is clearly superior, especially in a situation like you've just described wherein your opponents are a seasoned team of veteran players. But I know with 20+ years of FPS experience you've no doubt encountered that teammate who could've saved your life with just a simple callout or even some sort of vague warning, who couldn't give you any of that information due to lacking a microphone. When playing against a team like yours, having a guy give me short little tidbits of information between lives via text would still be more helpful than a no-mic giving me no useful information whatsoever.
