I think it should have splitscreen. Me and my brother have enjoyed countless hours playing games together, on the same couch, playing on the same screen. Even having game nights with friends. 4 player split screen is the best with a bunch of buddies.
Sure, halfed screens, dropped graphical settings and reduced framerates... But we never played games together to get a seamless, professional looking game. We played together for the fun of enjoying a game, right beside the person, sharing the same view.
I never understood how crappier graphics could throw somebody SO off their game, that it made them not want to play anymore. If splitscreen is really as horrible as you think it is, then you can play online, with your friends.
I just think it's easier to not press the splitscreen button, then to make friends bring their consoles and TVs with them all over place. Not all of us have multiple TVs and consoles in our homes. If you do, that's awesome and I envy you. But not all of us do.
Splitscreen is a great way to bond with friends and make awesome times that you can talk about over and over again. Not saying you can't do that online, but there's something special about splitscreen that can never be replicated or replaced.
Thanks for the post bro.

Well articulated and thoughtfully put. Thank you for sharing! I think you're absolutely right, and that Bungie has completely missed the mark with their poor explanation of their reasoning. I think it has to do with Activision, but that's just speculation. What I do know for sure, though, is that posts like yours will draw the attention of Bungie employees and should hopefully bring splitscreen back into their list of "things to consider" even if it's not going to be in the game at launch. Thanks again for your input!
