What they meant is that exploration and free will is a big part of the game, with split screen, your tethered to where someone wants to go or so on. It defeats the purpose that they had when making the game. Plus, it's their game and maybe they just wanted it to not be split screen. More than enough justification.

I can sort of understand that, but that's the issue here. When I sit down to play a game with someone, I'm already prepared to go where they go, or have them follow me. It's not like someone goes into splitscreen and the first thing they do is "Oh, hey, I'm just gonna wander off and do my own thing, on the same screen." Because that's not what they decided to do when they made the conscious decision to splitscreen in the first place. On top of that, I want to play Destiny with my wife (others with their kids, fathers, roommates etc.) and without including splitscreen, if I want to play Destiny, I am forced to have a second console station set-up just to play. It would be nice to have the choice. Another "on top of that" is that my friends and I created characters specifically to only play with each other. Meaning there's no reason for any of us to go anywhere without the fireteam. In fact, Destiny does not allow a fireteam to be on separate planets/in separate zones. So, in reality, to have the freedom they seem to think we want, you would have to leave your fireteam.
