Sony has posted a loss 6 out of the last 7 years adding up to about 100 billion dollars total... Microsoft made 8 billion last year. I don't see them hopping into bed together, nor do I see Sony staying the company it is for the next decade. I don't see anyone else jumping in the console game and being competitive until either MS or Sony is out of the way. Just my opinion

To be fair Sony can afford to ride out the losses as they continue to restructure as they still have $148bn in assets. Apple were in a similar situation in the 90's, as long as you can ride the market out, it's usually OK. Microsoft's biggest problem is having a new CEO who doesn't understand the true value of the XBox brand and instead is restructuring the business around this silly duality nonsense.

Yeah Microsoft isn't making money on xbox, they're supporting that side of the business. MS is in every home and business around the world on the PC side, that's tremendously bigger than game consoles ever will be. Sony's money maker is consumer electronics where they have way more competition. Sony is a long way from being apple, sony has intelligent customers who will change if they see a better product (ie xbox 360 people going over to the ps4). Apple people are fanatics who will buy anything with a logo on it no matter how overpriced it is, so Sony has to be way more intuitive about what their customers want. That leaves you trying hard to please all the people all the time and that is a losing battle.

That's true but my point on Apple is that for a good 10 year stretch they were toxic, nobody wanted their products, they were a footnote, a joke in the industry, they changed their vision, restructured (out of necessity) came back and built their following to become the recognised brand leader. I'm not saying Sony will ever come close to that, but I think they will turn things around. With Microsoft I'm just worried that with nobody championing the XBox brand and a board of crusty old men who don't see it's potential that it's more likely to be written off than the playstation is.

It's quite possible, never know what will happen when profits don't meet goals... As long as I can play from the comfort of my living room I really don't care which system I use at this point. I just have no intention of ever going back to PC lol. That's for people with way more free time than I have :P

I'm with you on that although PC's are getting better, I still think Steambox is going to be a major unit shifter.
-
Yeah I was thinking that was a contender but I feel one of the big 2 has to tank hard for it to really succeed, unless of course they make a monster next generation stomper.
-
I think once people realise the can pay £20 less for new releases that are graphically superior and still have more functionality than the current crop of consoles (as well as being able to use the same controllers) it has a chance of crossing over into the living room.

Microsoft isn't doing itself any favors with the Xbox systems.

No don't get me wrong, I think the PS4 is a better pure gaming system. I just don't see it making it to the end of the "war" unless their other business lines picks up. That said I am one of the few gamers who actually wants more than just a game box which is why I went with the Xbone. Also, I see VR tech being much more feasible on the Xbone than the PS4.(that also is just an opinion)

As long as there is demand the "war" will not see an end. As long as Sony continues to deliver superior tech ie, 30ish % more TFLOPS potential 3x GB/s bandwith on the standard RAM and still edging out xbox by 10GB/s when including xbox ESRAM. Also being x86-64 I can see VR being just viable on either platform. While the forced inclusion of kinect (initially) may see more widespread adoption earlier on xbox one. With Blu-ray becoming de fact o standard and proprietary to Sony, I would not count them down. I also personally do not feel either system is fully integrated with the extended "Entertainment" focus they are reaching for. They are making an effort which is great for those who prefer all in ones.
