Orbit is the Real Hub (and it shouldn't be)
So as the topic states, after playing through Beta with 3 maxed characters and plenty of item transfers in between, one of my largest complaints stems from a relatively small issue.
Why do we have to start from Orbit upon each log-in/character switch? Chances are, if you're logging on for the first time in the day, you want to stop off at the Tower to pick up some bounties, peruse the shops' rotating inventories, etc before just jumping into a mission. (Even Crucible has Bounties to pick up for a more productive use of time) So why not just have characters load into the Tower as a default? Going from Tower -> Orbit takes about 5 seconds, whereas going from Orbit -> Tower takes about 1-1.5 minutes. Each. Time.
This means if you want to transfer an item between your Guardians, you have to first:
1. Log on to Guardian with item you'd like to transfer. (Load Screen)
2. Select Tower from Orbit and launch. (Load Screen)
3. Deposit item in storage.
4. Log on to Guardian to receive item (Load Screen)
5. Select Tower from Orbit and launch. (Load Screen)
6. Remove item from storage.
7. Finally go on mission/explore/Crucible with newly transferred item. (Load Screen)
Oh did you forget to deposit an item you wanted to transfer?
Repeat steps 1-7.
Compare this to if Guardians logged in right at the Tower (which is supposedly our Home right?).
1. Log in AND deposit items in same step.
2. Log in to 2nd Guardian AND remove items in same step.
3. Be on your merry way.
Would anyone actually be upset if they had to start from Tower and take the extra 5 seconds to go back to Orbit rather than the other way around? Should something as simple as transferring an item between Guardians be a tedious process involving--at minimum--4 separate load screens?

Edited by HeliosGaming: 7/29/2014 11:32:09 PMI'd like to start in Orbit because, ; By the time I'm finished my game time, I'd have crafted everything I needed for the time, did my engrams, checked out shop reset times, check how many more Rep tokens I need for Legendaries/Exotic. Then I'd head to bed or wherever else I have to go. So when I log In, I can get right into the action and plan my game-day.

1 ReplyEdited by STARSIDE DESTINY: 7/29/2014 3:41:09 AMThe Tower would still have to be loaded up anyway, so the only time you'd be saving is the time spent navigating through the Director to press "Set Destination->Tower->Launch". Also, there are rumors that the Reef is a hub area/social space too, so that once you reach endgame you may actually want to go to the Reef before you go to the Tower to check in on stuff. EDIT: As a personal note, there have been far worse systems of transfer in games. For example, transferring all of my Pokémon from Black 2 to Y took me 4 hours. If you manage your gear right, it will take you 10 minutes tops to transfer gear from one character to another.

I hate being put into orbit by default. It was very immersion breaking at the end of the second mission. At the end of the mission your ghost carries you to the Tower for the cut scene with the Speaker only for you to be put in orbit to have to select to go to the Tower again to check out your loot and stuff from the mission when you were just there. Why couldn't it just leave you at the Tower since you are there anyway?

Never considered this idea before, but a very valid. An option of where you want to start, whether it be earth or the tower, whichever should be available. But starting at the tower makes the most sense.

I would like an option in the menu of when logging-in, to default load into the Tower, or into Orbit.

I would prefer to be placed in orbit after logging in only because of the hard cap on tower population. I generally invite a couple friends in as soon as I log into the game and they usually wouldn't be able to join me at the tower. However, if that issue was fixed, I would prefer the tower.

3 RepliesBungie has expressed a desire for players to be able to go directly into something and play for 15mins and get off, versus the hours most of us intend to put in. It is so casual gamers or people with lives can hop on and get a sense of completion or just blow away baddies for a little bit and log off.

I say orbit for one reason, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure orbit is the simplest way to join a fireteam with your friends. I never tried doing t inside the tower but I played with my friend the whole time and I think that should be streamlined in higher priority than transferring items. But again, correct me if I'm wrong

I like this idea. In the full game it will be much more necessary to check the tower at each login. But perhaps the full game will have hubs on other planets, making a ship start' more logical. If this is the case your idea could still be offered from within the game settings as these new hubs were discovered, (e.g. game launch: ship, earth tower, moon tower, etc)

During the beta, the twitter said that going to orbit is how your game downloads patches on the fly. NY guess is that's why we start there instead if a city. I do agree with your points for sure though, would help the process of. Perhaps, it so you can go anywhere from orbit?

I agree with this. We don't live in our cars, we live at home, if it's even available for hospitality.

I like the idea however I think they should allow us to move items and collect bounties through the mobile app. It will allow everything to happen quicker and if you could then we could still start in orbit and it wouldn't matter.

1 ReplyOrbit is better, imo, as it is a far quicker method to fly to the planet you want. Usually you log on to the character you want to play with for that day.

Even better than this would be if we could actually use the supposed Hub area [i]as a Hub area[/i] and set a destination from the Tower. Right now it's not the central hub, it's the Town you have to visit that's far off the road.
