Difference between Attack and Impact?

Hey guys, played the beta the last few days and it was awesome! Some things I was a tad confused about and was hoping some of you fine upstanding gentlemen/women could help me understand. What does the Attack statistic mean? Is that how much damage the weapon does, or does it just act as the "level" of the weapon? Because you can find an assault rifle and a rocket launcher, both with the same attack stat. Also, Impact. Is THIS damage? Or is it maybe how much impact/knock back it causes on the target, like if it makes them flinch or not when shot? Maybe it affects how much damage gets through to enemies with armor or shields? Basically I was looking for an explanation of those two stats in relation to each other. Also, what does the Range mean? Do the rounds disappear after a certain distance? Or is it meant to represent the first shot accuracy of the weapon? Or do they have damage drop-off in the game, similar to Battlefield, where bullets start losing damage after a certain point? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sincerely, an MMO newb.

  • Okay, buddy. Attack is the Player vs. Environment stat. The higher the attack, the more damage the gun does, and it also lets you hit higher level targets. This will also factor in during the Iron Banner, where all stats are factored in. Impact is the base damage the gun does at the optimal distance from said target. The higher the impact, the more damage the gun will do over other guns in that class (i.e. an Auto Rifle with low impact does much less damage than an Auto Rifle with mid impact rating). Range effects how far the bullet can go and still do the optimum amount of damage. The further out you are of that optimal range, the less damage you will do. From testing this, the guns go in this order of longest to shortest ranged on average: Sniper Rifle - Scout Rifle - Hand Cannon - Pulse Rifle - Auto Rifle - Heavy Machine Gun - Fusion Rifle - Shotgun. Rockets aren't counted in from what I saw. They have no Range stat, and, rather, have Velocity, which sets how fast the projectile will move. I hope this helps anyone and everyone who was confused. Any more questions? Just ask.

  • In the regular crucible PVP impact is basically how much damage you deal based off of that information you look at the other stats and you can tell how the gun is going to play out then you just need to tested in the game to see how you like the kick. Now when it comes to PBE or the iron banner they attack of the weapon actually does matter because it's no longer balanced to be the same number as your opponent. Same goes for your defense of rating as opposed to your classes actual armor agility and recovery when you're in the regular crucible you just want to look at those stats not your defensive pts

  • I think impact is how much damage your gun does based on the range you are shooting your target from.

    • Range is how long before your rounds start doing less damage, your attack changes with each level you go and your impact is the multiplier for the attack, so something like the handcannon and the scout rifle with high all of these are really good for taking down enemies with 1-2 headshots, whereas the guns with them low like the auto rifle and the pulse rifle make up for it with rof, and i personally beleive in the crucible to keep it balanced, your damage is based solely on your impact and range and your attack has no effect on it.

      • The range thing is there because damage drops off the farther you are from the target. As forte other stats, im in the dark as well
