Destiny's Biggest Problem: It's a Social Game with No Communication

The beta has been great overall. There are some balance changes that are needed, but I'm confident that that can be ironed out. My biggest concern is that I've played 14 hours and I only talked to one person other than my two clanmates. Is it just me? Have you talked with anyone? There are two issues I think. 1) Voice Chat is really limited: - No voice chat in PVP. It's entirely team-based, but I can't talk to anyone? Is voice chat really limited to fireteams only? That's crazy limited. I just moved from 360 to PS4 so I don't have a lot of friends yet. It'd be cool to get to know some other Destiny players. - Is there really no voice chat in Strikes by default? Strikes are 3 person fireteams, but whenever I did a strike, no one talked. I clicked R3 on my teammate, invited them to my fireteam, at which point they went back to orbit, then re-entered the game and I could talk to them! How does that make sense? Is this really how it works? If we make voice chat more common, then we'll need options. Like "All", "Team" and "None". Just like Halo games. 2) If you accept that voice chat is going to be really limited, there's still no effective way to talk to teammates. The built-in gestures are fun in the Tower, but useless in the field. - Waving is good while exploring, but unhelpful during strikes. - Pointing is completely useless unless you're looking directly at your teammate. And even then it's only good for a direction, not pointing at an object. - Sitting? Why would I sit in an active battlezone? I suppose it's nice for sitting for screenshots with Bungie's beautiful skyboxes, but I don't *need* it like I do the stuff below. - Dancing is just fine. We really need combat-related gestures. Here are some ideas I brainstormed this morning. Feel free to add/criticize - Call target. Have you tried to take out that Demon Walker with a team that is just shooting at whatever they damn well please? Being able to really call out what to shoot will make teams much more effective. - Rally to me/ Regroup. Strikes start out in wide open explore territory. I had a teammate get distracted and wander off at the start and my other teammate charged straight ahead. There was no way to tell one to hurry up and the other to wait up. So very frustrating. It'd also be helpful for trying to group up in between waves like during the Strike. - Awesome/Thank You. Those two above are great for combat, but we need a way to interact with our teammates too. Someone resurrects you? Say thanks! You shoot a Stealth Vandal right before they knife your buddy? Now you can see that they appreciate it, rather than just them wandering away. - Keep dancing. It's fun to dance on the broken shell of Sepkis Prime. A few more ideas: "Help!" "Revive Needed!" "Follow me!" "Attack/Defend" Perhaps even a system like Dark Souls where you can "equip" various gestures. How do y'all feel? Agree? disagree? Big problem? Not a problem? I posted this on Reddit's Destiny subreddit, where it's gotten a lot of great feedback. I wanted to make sure it was seen here too. Edit: Thanks for all the great responses, everyone. And thanks for jumping in, DeeJ! Some things I wanted to highlight were: - This great mock-up of what an expanded gesture system could look like. - Some discussion on suggested individual voice settings for different play areas. - And a great solution that lets players decide up front what voice options they want, without a lot of fiddliness. I also wanted to point out with how well Hearthstone has done with limiting player interactions. It's a little different because it's not a team-based game, but like Dark Souls, it won't let players abuse each other. This is why I think gestures with non-friends is such a great option. It'll keep things positive and helpful but still let players participate who don't want to use/hear voice. I'm not sure how much of this is feasible for game that's going to release in 48 days (gold master is probably much sooner!). So these are some wishlist items to be sure. I hope we can make some voice changes by launch at the least and maybe keep an expanded gesture system in mind for future updates. Voice chat (or even free text chat) can definitely be abused, so Bungie's concern is totally valid. I'm glad they're listening to us and look forward to the response! P.S. This is my favorite response.

    • Sometimes you just need to communicate by action not words. And I don't mean pointing waving saluting or dancing.

    • Well it's not a social game for me! But it gives the option! You just have to join groups!

      • To the vocal minority opposing proximity chat... The most common argument in opposition to prox chat seems to be, "just wave and invite them to your FT." Easier said than done, for example. I must have run ten strike missions, and through matchmaking was grouped with twenty other guardians over the course of those ten missions. As a rule, i would wave, buddy jump, and quickly send FT invites to my strike mates, to better coordinate, call for revival etc. etc. during said strike. Of those twenty guardians, two from separate strikes joined my FT. Now, your experience may have been much different in comparison to mine, but that does not change MY experience. What a terrible ratio!!! You can argue, and rationalize all you want. It was like pulling teeth. The system for communication in destiny is a glaring mistake (imho) in an otherwise amazing product. I feel as a community we should be given an official vote handled by bungie for the definitive consensus we deserve on this major issue. I hope i didn't offend anyone, lol. Thank you.

      • Not having open/configurable voice chat is a massive step backwards. When I'm playing PvP, I need to co-ordinate with my teammates. In PvE, I'd really like to be able to chat with random players I come across, and my team in strikes. I'm a social person, I like talking to people. If someone became a problem I'd just mute them, problem solved. Theres no need to get upset if someones being disruptive. You need to decide what you're doing here bungie, making a single player oriented game or an MMO. As far as I'm concerned the chat at the moment is not up to modern standards. What about the folk who are going to buy destiny but none of their friends will have it? Do you just expect them to sit and be mute in the crucible etc? It just wouldn't be fun for them.

        • I played the Beta with a friend, we were fine talking to one another within the fire-team. If Proximity chat is added, have it default off.. Having randoms run up and melee or dance or just being immature was bad enough without having to hear them..

I get many of the OP points but I am totally opposed to any open/'always on' type of chat unless it's limited to the Tower. My experience with the Fireteam only chat was great. I loved not having to hear non-game-related conversations and constant trash talk while in Explore. It helped with the immersion and made my gameplay a completely enjoyable experience. I hope this doesn't change. Edit: If anything changes; have it be as it was in the beta by default and add a "customize" option.

        • PROXIMITY CHAT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE AS AN OPTION WHEN PLAYING STORY MODES. I hear nobody talking in multiplayer. the teamwork is useless. I don't need to invite every random dude to my fireteam just to communicate with him in a multiplayer match...... WHAT IS THIS??? If you are worried about ppl bullying other people, or annoying young kids, there is a "MUTE" button....

          • Yeah we need to be able to talk to people, in all modes! And for people that think it's going to uin the game, you can mute. Game chat is an option we should definitely have. We gotta push for this one

          • They need to have an isolated section on the tower where if u enter it everyone can talk to everyone Like a room or something A chat room .. That way we can make friends and do things with random people ... Also have the option to only talk to one person since everyone will be talking and also to mute people ... Or a call option like in GTA 5 .. Never got to make any friends on the beta cause I could not talk to them :(

            • OP...All great ideas. I especially like the mock up of expanded gesture system. If you had the ability to utilize the D-pad to select and toggle a category...in conjunction with using right analog to select a response...that would be sweet.

            • Thank you for this. I really hope Bungie notices, because this lack of communication is HUGE. To me, Destiny could be one of the greatest FPSes on the market right now if it expanded its communication options. I play video games for interaction; with NPCs, with other realms, and, thanks to the Internet, now with other players. I'm shocked to see Destiny's potential for socialization so stunted. If Destiny was destined to be a single player game, then I wouldn't mind as much. But its emphasis on online play screams cognitive dissonance. All Destiny needs is a simple, optional, regional text or voice chat system. For PVP and other modes, voice would be great, but at the very least text chat for the Tower that can be toggled on and off. Text chat would be ideal for the hub spaces like the Tower; perfect for party organizing and making meaningful connections with other players that would help foster a sense of community that I fear Destiny would lack without it. I really hope you reconsider the communication options, Bungie, or at least consider text chat (with censorship/reporting options, because I'm sure those of us asking for open socializing would do our best to help keep the place as friendly as possible). As evident by this beta, Destiny will be something great. All I ask is that you recognize our desire for a complete interactive experience. Thank you!

              • They should at least make a chat box with a censoring system that can be switched off and on. If your someone who Is offended by other people's swearing, switch on the censoring and those words will be blocked out with symbols. If your fine with it, then you have no need to censor it.

              • My solution: I'll start by saying how much I enjoyed the game and how excited I am to see destiny hit the stores everywhere. It was fun, it was exciting, and after the beta was closed up, it left me wanting more. I'm glad I had the opportunity to play the beta. Now that I've said that, on to the suggestions. One of the main things I would like to see implemented into the game is more interaction with other guardians, specifically with chat and fire team option. 1.) If you've spent any time in the tower, no doubt you've seen the emote system. Dancing, waving, pointing, and sitting, along with the ability to lock on to other players and Emote to them. For example, "Player 1 dances with Player 2". I wish to expand upon the interaction between guardians and suggest the use of an in game messaging system. When I lol on to another player, I would like to see a list of options for interaction. For example, Player 1 locks onto Player 2 ad can send a 'Chat Request'. Player 2 receives the notification and can choose to deny or accept. The list could be furthered by being able to invite a player into the fire team, emoting with them, or inspecting equipment an stats. 2.) the main problem I see with my idea include people spamming invites and/or chat requests. To solve the issue, a player may set their options to automatically decline or ignore these requests. 3.) to further the effectiveness of my chat feature suggestion, the messaging system could be boiled down to two main parts: the inquiry, and the reason. (The most effective example would be messages in dark souls 2) for example, Inquiries could be broken into two listings, chat requests and fire team invites. Reasons could be broken into a few listings, "Raid", "Fireteam:Crucible", and "Fireteam:Story/explore". A quick example could be: "Player 1 has sent you a Chat Request", "Player 1 would like you to join his Fireteam for a a raid" I believe that this system, with limiting factors an rules in place, would be a great addition to the game. If anyone has any suggestions for a similar system or changes, they would all be appreciated, along with any suggestions on refining my idea. Edit: I also believe this suggestion would eliminate the need for a proximity chat. (I don't like proximity chat because I feel it would get much too loud in some areas.) And also eliminates the need for a text chat (if you've ever played a game with public chat rooms you know how bad these can turn out: spammers mainly.) If a public chat room of sorts WERE to be done however, the only way I could see anything like t being done would be a pre set message broadcasted on the feed on the players screen, to which others could reply by accepting or declining. Perhaps a player could open his Fireteam/raid group up and send a request to players in the vicinity, who could promptly queue up or ignore.

I agree. I think there's a lot of simple fixes for this via emotes, clan chat if there is a thing etc. "Second party data" for socializing sucks, it should be in the game.

                • Voicechat was limited but it worked for me in PVP and in a fireteam. Is this a PS4 issue? I have an X1 and we tried using the xbox live party chat which did not work but once we left the live party the ingame chat was fine as long as they were in your fireteam.
