The Lifeless World and Environment of Destiny

I agree and wish to see changes made

It doesn't bother me either way

I disagree and wish to see no changes made

To start I have to say that Destiny is a really, really pretty game. It looks for all intents and purposes fantastic. However the environment/world so far has been boring, extremely boring. Environment The maps and environments the players play in are seriously sterile and lifeless, the player can’t interact with it on any level whatsoever and nothing changes no matter how much time has passed or what happens. The best example of this is where you can see the Fallen and the Hive duking it out in the areas of the Cosmodrone. Sure they are fighting each other, in the same places however they do nothing else but give us something to shoot. You don’t see which side wins, there aren’t corpses littered around, you don’t see them disposing (or absorbing) their dead and because no one ever wins there are no effects on the environment. Imagine the Fallen cleansing the area of the hive presence when they win while observing the toxic effect the hive previously had on the environment retreat as the Fallen become more present in the tunnels and set up a serious base of operations. Only to have the hive emerge from right underneath them in a surprise assault which defeats/displaces the fallen and watch the environment undergo another shift where the barnacles and green miasma of the Hive spread into buildings and the general area. Instead we have a few units that run out and shoot each other over and over again where we could have a wonderful, interesting and intricate cycle. Also there is legitimately nothing to find in the environment except a chest or ghost here or there (and spinmetal) players should be able to scavenge things from dead guardians (not PCs), old supply caches, supplies guarded by enemies etc. There is none of that to be found here which makes adventuring/ killing never ending re-spawned AI’s unrewarding. Scavenging in this setting makes sense and for gameplay it fits in for exchange and glimmer purposes.
The use of only one unchanging map “for everything” should not occur. Ever. I really do hope we come back to earth and unlock even more areas to enjoy so we have some variety but for now we have been in the same map for many separate missions (and raid of sorts) going in slightly different directions each time. All of these missions should have really been clumped together namely finding the ship and the warp drive and finding the hive then activating the array. This would help improve player interest in going back to these areas.
Lifeless The NPC’s in this game are glorified vending machines or seemingly do nothing at all. They have exceedingly little substance with only a fragment of personality given in their dialogue, I have no reason to care about the various groups that have vendors in the game or their views as their missions consist of two sentences in free mode that involve collecting or killing things that have no impact on their dialogue, actions or environment. What you do is folded out of existence never to be heard again until you repeat that same mission
and considering we just came back from the dead this is the perfect opportunity to allow the player to ask questions or inform us of these things while interacting with characters we will be seeing often.
Your enemies have no purpose whatsoever. They stand around, looking around places for no reason and then defend them to the death like they are somehow important (none of them actually run away or escape). Killing on sight is ok for some but the Fallen are a hit and run race that are supposed to utilise agility to fight yet they stand out in the open most of the time and are not agile in any sense of the word (they can also scale walls really well but I have yet to see that actually implemented in their AI). All in all these reasons kill any intention of going back to explore because you already know exactly what it will be like and know that it hasn't changed since you last saw it.

  • I got past the 2nd paragraph. Who says the outcome of their enemy battle doesn't change? The lvl cap is 8! Of course you're not going to see an outcome.

I agree, but is there really any next gen game so far that has what you're looking for? I'm curious...

        • I completely agree on the one map for several different missions. I was so sick of visiting the same areas over and over, killing the same enemies. The drab environment of Old Russia got old quick. There definitely seems to be a big lack of exploration from what I witnessed in the small piece. I saw a couple of small caves and single rooms I could run into and find a chest but nothing to make me think "Hey, I'm on to something interesting here. I bet I'm going to find some good loot."I seriously hope this is only because it is the Beta and each planet or moon will have more varied areas.

          • You need a 4th Poll option "I cannot make an informed decision yet as I am only playing a VERY SMALL beta version of the complete game"

              • You guys are all forgetting that this is just a beta which is just a minuscule taste of the entire game. Obviously you're going to get bored with one map. Do you think Halo would be fun if it only let you play the first level? Or Mass Effect if you could only play the first 5 missions over and over and over again? Use your brains people.

                • I agree that this is true, I am however confidant that the point, made by many others here as well, will solve itself once we et the actual game. I look forward to much exploring and backstory.

I agree. The world of Destiny should be almost fully interactive, with plenty of opportunities and ever-changing game conditions. Now it is quite predictable. The players should be able to find something interesting in every place they look. Destiny is a game of great potential, so why don't stuff it with many more cool things? Every little idea can do here, every little aspect matters.

                    • They could learn a bit from defiance, in a few aspects of the game from, the lifeless environment the poor AI of the enemy's thoughts if any one has played defiance before? I know it's a beta but still it's only a month till full launch? Thoughts please

                      • I think part of the reason is the place they picked for the Beta. Old Russia just is not a interesting place. There are places like ruined cities and garden worlds and we get to explore the least interesting place of the lot. Having said that, I do agree with the OP.

                      • While I do honestly enjoy playing destiny and happily stand sniping mobs. I have to agree. To say this is a next gen game, it's very static and predictable. It would be nice to see more But then again, should I really care? Come release I don't think I'd be in starting areas as much as am during beta. And even then just be killing shit and not looking back

                      • Yeah. I've been exploring for a while now and I'm losing interest fast. There simply isn't enough to do in Old Russia. Almost every cave or room I check is empty and when I do find a chest the reward isn't very exciting. Some more collectibles would be nice. I enjoy finding things like journals, photographs and audio logs. Vanguard missions are fun for a bit but they get repetitive very quickly. I'm either walking to a specific location or killing low level enemies. Public events are exciting but they don't happen frequently so there's nothing to do most of the time. You're right about the enemies too. They make the environment feel very static. There's no variation or strategy to them. They spawn in the same locations and never chase you or change their tactics. Not only does it make the fights repetitive, it makes them look stupid. "Well... the last 500 guys had their head's blown off but I guess I'll go." says the Fallen vandal as he leaps unto the smoldering pile of Fallen corpses.

                        • My only gripe here is the predetermined enemy AI spawns. They spawn in the same place and once you kill them, they just cycle through again with the same pattern. I hope this changes in the final game to a more organic system.

Agreed, there doesn't seem to be much incentive for exploration and discovery aside from the very rare Dead Ghost or Loot Chest. The caves don't appear to hold much at all for the most part, which makes them feel pointless. With only spinmetal to collect from the environment and the other items that might be found like weapon parts and sapphire wire amongst other things, its feels like they are for nothing. Another thing is that there is no clear way to earn Glimmer (mission/strike reward glimmer for example would be nice) the world feels a bit stale at times. Lastly, the AI could use a little polishing, the enemies are pretty smart for the most part and react accordingly to grenades and being aimed at for a head shot, but yesterday I walked up to a group of Fallen at an angle and they didn't do anything until I decided to shoot. They weren't walking around like usual, just standing there. These are my only real issues with Destiny at this point and I'm really enjoying the game, but this is what I feel is holding back the game from being truly grand!

                          • I'can't agree more, the game has wasted so many details it contained, and the story telling is a disaster. There is no impulsion for me to enjoy the story ,just try to get it done like everyday routine

I'd love to see such changes in the environment and even more creative design. But I really doubt that it would be possible before release and I cannot see any reason why all of that should be held back in the beta. That's why I have concerns about how that game in it's present state could be fun for the ten years it's planned for. Nevertheless I hope the best for September. Go for it Bungie!

                                  • Started a new topic: Think Red Dead Redemption and Fallout 3

                                  • These are legitimate concerns that I have as well. Sadly the game is almost ready to be shipped and drastic suggested for Earth probably won't happen. I for one want to see something like Guam, or Hawaii in the game. However the AI it seems to me could easily be fixed. I have particularly been wanting the sharks to fly high in the air and go over the large crate or rock I hide behind...

                                  • You are absolutely right. Then again, there ARE chests and loot to be pilvered, but they are guarded by fallen that headbutt a Golden Gun without flinching soooo... yea... Those battles really make it absolutely boring and those NPC's should give us bits of lore. BUT this is a beta. I would like to believe that Bungie in making this borrowed the experience from Blizzard through Activision but just chose not to show them to see what the community says.

You make some good points. I noticed this too and I've only really played for an hour. (majority of my gaming will be done during the week and weekend coming). Things got a bit interesting when I did the hive mission but up in the tower I felt it missed something. What I feel would be cool is to have something where you get a tour around the tower (whether it be by cutscene after you first come to the tower or other means I'm not sure) where they are all introduced and give some sort of introduction to give each npc some sort of importance. Kinda like in the Borderlands series but all at once instead of when you meet them.

Agreed. Unfortunately there is no time to implement such big changes. A beta actually is a test of the completed game, finding / fixing bugs, improve stability and netcode. There are only 7 weeks left till release. The retail versions need to get produced and delivered to the stores and we've never seen once any wildlife or even other cities. Actually I am more worried about the PvE content at all. Simply way too less currently.

                                      • I would also like to see a bigger Earth map, I was under the impression that the world was going to be much bigger in order to inhabit the amount of players eagerly awaiting the release. Instead I normally resort to exploring while waiting for other fire teams to move on. I hope and I believe that the BETA is still hiding the soul of this game, especially since we cannot take control of areas yet. But if we're all packed into earth as it is now, even as just a starting point many people will shy away. On a side note, I also wish there was an indicator to which missions you've completed already. Making the beacons change color would be a good way to help us complete all the missions with out trying to remember what each wall or rock looked like.
