The Lifeless World and Environment of Destiny

I agree and wish to see changes made

It doesn't bother me either way

I disagree and wish to see no changes made

To start I have to say that Destiny is a really, really pretty game. It looks for all intents and purposes fantastic. However the environment/world so far has been boring, extremely boring. Environment The maps and environments the players play in are seriously sterile and lifeless, the player can’t interact with it on any level whatsoever and nothing changes no matter how much time has passed or what happens. The best example of this is where you can see the Fallen and the Hive duking it out in the areas of the Cosmodrone. Sure they are fighting each other, in the same places however they do nothing else but give us something to shoot. You don’t see which side wins, there aren’t corpses littered around, you don’t see them disposing (or absorbing) their dead and because no one ever wins there are no effects on the environment. Imagine the Fallen cleansing the area of the hive presence when they win while observing the toxic effect the hive previously had on the environment retreat as the Fallen become more present in the tunnels and set up a serious base of operations. Only to have the hive emerge from right underneath them in a surprise assault which defeats/displaces the fallen and watch the environment undergo another shift where the barnacles and green miasma of the Hive spread into buildings and the general area. Instead we have a few units that run out and shoot each other over and over again where we could have a wonderful, interesting and intricate cycle. Also there is legitimately nothing to find in the environment except a chest or ghost here or there (and spinmetal) players should be able to scavenge things from dead guardians (not PCs), old supply caches, supplies guarded by enemies etc. There is none of that to be found here which makes adventuring/ killing never ending re-spawned AI’s unrewarding. Scavenging in this setting makes sense and for gameplay it fits in for exchange and glimmer purposes.
The use of only one unchanging map “for everything” should not occur. Ever. I really do hope we come back to earth and unlock even more areas to enjoy so we have some variety but for now we have been in the same map for many separate missions (and raid of sorts) going in slightly different directions each time. All of these missions should have really been clumped together namely finding the ship and the warp drive and finding the hive then activating the array. This would help improve player interest in going back to these areas.
Lifeless The NPC’s in this game are glorified vending machines or seemingly do nothing at all. They have exceedingly little substance with only a fragment of personality given in their dialogue, I have no reason to care about the various groups that have vendors in the game or their views as their missions consist of two sentences in free mode that involve collecting or killing things that have no impact on their dialogue, actions or environment. What you do is folded out of existence never to be heard again until you repeat that same mission
and considering we just came back from the dead this is the perfect opportunity to allow the player to ask questions or inform us of these things while interacting with characters we will be seeing often.
Your enemies have no purpose whatsoever. They stand around, looking around places for no reason and then defend them to the death like they are somehow important (none of them actually run away or escape). Killing on sight is ok for some but the Fallen are a hit and run race that are supposed to utilise agility to fight yet they stand out in the open most of the time and are not agile in any sense of the word (they can also scale walls really well but I have yet to see that actually implemented in their AI). All in all these reasons kill any intention of going back to explore because you already know exactly what it will be like and know that it hasn't changed since you last saw it.

  • there should definatly be more interaction with your environment, explosive things or if you shoot a fire extinguisher that theres some white fuzz coming out =D definatly add some exploration rewards to the spinmetal and stuff. like being able to find 3 glimmer in a locker or something.

yes I agree, open world really need some more life. My suggestions are: - Friendly NPC - questgivers, vendors, achievements, random, mercenaries - wildlife, - no animals?, serioussly?

  • I totally agree with the OP . I understand this is a beta and not a finished product, however i was expecting far more life and soul to this new world. Bungie has an amazing opportunity here to make a world that people fall in love with. Why make a beautiful environment and have it be lifeless and dull? I will give them that, bungie has made a visually impressive game environment but if they don't fill it with anything..What's the point? Like many others in this thread I expected more depth to the story as well, the lack of explanation of the history and lore is disappointing and the lack of interaction with npc's and lack of npc's all together are a huge drawback to the story of Destiny. When I think of the games that i truly enjoyed and played for hours on end, I think of the characters that made the story great. How many of us where thrilled when Master Chief and Cortana returned? Or when Commander Shepard was brought back to life to save the galaxy? Like I said, I understand that this a beta, but I for one will b sincerely disappointed if Bungie doesn't beef up the story and environment in the finished product.

    • I was quite happy until reading your entire post, now I actually realise how dull the world actually is hah, a year or two ago Bungie were promising "huge" open worlds, vast worlds, filled with loot and treasure for those brave enough to venture.... Huge, if Old Russia is anything to go by not really.. And yep, instead of finding just Spinmetal I want to be able to find things like scrap metal and other bits and bobs to aid in weapon upgrades and crafting, more collectibles and not just dead Ghosts, lore books, things like that, the game overall doesn't feel as big, vast and epic as was promised these last few year Yes, before anyone says, I'm well aware "this is just the beta" please, hardly anything drastic will change, be honest.

I've played the Alpha and Beta for 15+ hours (each) and I really have to agree. I do like Explore mode a lot and it's what I play by myself but mainly to gain Vanguard reputation. One thing I think they could do that wouldn't be super hard from a technical/engine perspective, and I don't see much downside, is do the same difficulty selector system for Explore mode. Level 2 - Easy, Level 8 - Normal or something, whatever the scale is. This would make it way more fun for end-game, higher-level characters. Imagine playing Old Russia on Legend difficulty or something and finding blue and legendary gear with larger mobs, harder and smarter enemies. This is sort of what Strikes are, but a Strike is still limited area and has a "mission" type feel. I'd like to do Explore mode and not have every Dreg be a one-shot headshot. I agree there should just be more "stuff" in Explore. Maybe it's because it's Old Russia and is supposed to be the "newbie" zone or whatnot, but like OP said, there's just not much there. Hopefully we'll see a lot more activities, public events, and things to collect/earn on other planets or other zones. We sort of saw a hint at that in the deeper, darker areas of Old Russia with ?? level enemies. I hope we'll see more of that in the final game. Finally, I really hope we see more variety of "random" missions. There's not much variety and most are boring "scout" and "pick up [insert fancy item name here]" after kills. The ones that really are enjoying are the kill a boss ones, like the one in The Divide. At least that provides a good challenge (but now at level 8 that's pretty easy too). I think this is something they could do pretty easily with their engine too, so I hope over time we'll see more variety in the types of random missions during Explore.

          • Completely agree, the whole world is boring as hell... And the thing with the Fallen completely got me too when I first got a sniper, I jumped onto a lampost and could snipe 3-4 groups of fallen, and what did they do? absolute jack shit, when they died, a new batch came in, and they ran back to their positions, they looked at me, doing nothing, i killed them, new batch came in. Very autonomous and lifeless.... And I agree with there being no interaction, the whole of Russia, while it looks good, it has zero purpose or any reason for explore to be, well explore. It might as well be called Skywatch Farm, as everyone goes there, kills mobs, thats it. The map serves no other purpose (outside of story but thats kind a 1 time dealio and has zero affect in your exploration). So far, Russia is pretty lackful.

Something that I haven't seen but am hoping is in the finished product is large open areas to explore. While the mission maps are large its really nothing but rubble buildings are so forth. The image I linked is what I expected to see a lot of in this game. I want to be able to fly on my sparrow into the wilderness and endless wastelands till the sun goes down and from what the trailers were trying to portray I simply do not see it. All I see is preset missions with very predictable ai......I hate to say it but from what I have seen so far this might as well have been Halo Reach 2.
I wanted to explore a ruined earth not Russias backyard....
I couldn't agree more with the OP. I've been trying my hardest to find "secrets" in the Beta. So, I've definitely went off the beaten path (well, I try to and then run into an invisible wall and plummet to my death ... really Bungie? Invisible walls in 2014?). The fact is, the game world is pretty confined as compared to a Skyrim or traditional MMO. Yet, despite the confined nature of the game, Skyrim and MMOs are much more "alive." How can this be? I've ran (or in the case of a Titan, lightly jogged) to a few off-the-beaten path towers, canyons, etc. only to realize that there is absolutely ZERO reason to ever go to these places save for an occasional crappy chest with about a 4% chance at loot and 120-150 glimmer. YAY! Not... Exploration isn't really exploration. It's wonder around looking for a handful of crappy loot chests while rocking out to Juke Box Hero. I think this is the only game I've ever listened to music to in order to combat the huge swaths of nothingness and trash mobs.

              • A well put together post. The world needs more life. If there are only a handful of other planets the scale of earth. then the 'world' in Destiny is extremely small and lifeless.

Once again another great feedback topic I agree with, only thing is, the game will be coming out in almost a month from the beta end date. Do you realize how much work this would take? So many items would have to be re-textured, a LOT of the game and environment would have to be completely redone.. I am hoping to see this as much as you are, but I honestly don't know if I can see such a large change made in such a short time.. Maybe if they release a 2.0 patch redoing a lot of things like la Diablo III, or if they release some DLC along the line. I have thought of a lot of suggestions in my topic, but didn't think of this, and I would actually really like to see this as well as I believe it would add, much longevity to the game, and make it not get boring running through the same areas.. Great thinking Guardian!

                • I definitely agree with the lack of interaction with NPCs. If my character fights hard to bring the proof of something on Earth (no spoilers), some voiced-over surprise or at least text dialog would be great. And for everyone saying that it's just a Beta; We're playing for a reason. They want our feedback. Please comment on anything you feel isn't perfect. I'd rather them get it right the first time than have major patches a year after the release (I'm looking at you BF4).

                  • I agree and disagree at the same time. Sure random chests and loot here and there will be most welcome by all. You comparing this game to mass effect and halo single mode campaigns. Explain to me how it could be made what you are proposing? Imagine you are lvl 8 titan and I'm lvl 2 warlock doing second quest in old ruasia. We are both on the same map. Just different level of characters and story. Now I have quest to go to area that fallen are controlling. You are looking at it (bored) and see some gunfight between fallen and hive. Hive can't take over this area because of my quest. Never compare single player games to mmo and vice versa. In single player game if something changes in the world it changes for you forever. Cities can be destroyed no problem there. You can't destroy area in mmo just like that because other players have quests, missions etc to do there. Sure this particular area is boring for you since you did all there was to do. Other players are just entering it. It is new for them... In full game you will move on after reaching some lvl and probably never come back to old russia. At least not on the same character. People are getting bored of Old Russia quick. It is fully understendable. Keep in mind though it is only small friction of DESTINY UNIVERSE. I saw people talking about boring npc's. Believe me boring npc is the one that has something to say every time you visit him. Not only boring but annoying as hell. Random spawn areas for mobs would be nice though. Knowing exactly where every group is...is a bit boring after a while.

                    • I would like to see some wildlife like they incorporated into halo reach and hive drop ship locations to be more randomized. Also more incentive to explore. I explored soooo much in the alpha just because I haven't seen it before. But now I want a reason to want to see everything. Loot chest that are worthwhile, and guarded, not just cleverly hidden.

                    • I agree. My biggest complaint is the emptiness of it all. We were told there would be great meaningful loot drops. I have killed devil walkers and hallowed wizards galore and those enemies aren't even dropping loot! All the loot I'm getting worth anything is from mid difficulty enemies or the grunts. How can you have boss battles that give you zero loot? That makes no sense and kills the experience because what's the point in going into that public event against a devil walker only to walk away with nothing but a few glimmer? The risk/reward ratio is horrendous in that regard. 90% of the loot I get is thrown away because it isn't useful. What happened to the loot systems we were promised?

                      • When people were first talking about Destiny, I was hearing how crazy the coding was for the environment from the GameStop workers. That the developers weren't even sure what would happen cuz the code evolved randomly meaning that you could have a random rock slide or snow storm. A Guy even said that in Alpha a town was destroyed by a storm. I have yet to see any hint of this "evolving" environment that many have been speaking of. I hope it is true and happens soon

Agreed Lifeless and pointless and I don't feel like this is just part of the beta - so many things are done right but this is 2014 we expect a lot more than halo next gen -right now it feels like it -actually I think halo had more npc scripting - the lifeless enemy respawn is very disappointing

agree, they should put the option to explore to fin chests, secret bosses, and maybe find new missions by yourself, that would be exploring

                          • I agree about the environment, it looks nice but there is nothing to it. You can't interact with anything. I want to see more destructible objects, open doors, clear pathways, traps, etc. All I can do with this is run and jump.

                          • I guess when we really get around to it, nobody could honestly say that this game is "bad" in the first few hours while we were grinding to find out our "undisclosed" level cap. We all had fun because it was a new place, new things to see and do and a race to get the best stuff , but then the first upset came, the level cap was 8 which was cause for concern because if we could reach that in a few hours imagine just how quickly we could reach the full game level cap. For most people the leveling up process is the most fun, seeing ourselves get better skills and our hard work pay off by getting to use those items that we thought was just out of reach. Then the second upset came, the missions were done very quickly I understand very well that this is a beta and that we shouldn't expect the game to spoil everything but their was no life in the game at all just a "go here and do that" in the same old map over and over and over again fighting the same old people. It gets very boring (or so I speak for myself) but the point that needs to get across to every saying this game is bad and so on and so forth should put a rest to that, the fact we can't do as much as we thought is what bothers us, the game capped off to quick leaving us nothing to do but either stare at the sky or play a few crucible matches or even jump off the railing off the tower. There's no interaction between players socially. It's very quiet in this game which makes it worse, but I can only hope that we all know that once the full game comes out then we can really see if our voices are heard. To see this game and then finally give an honest opinion. For now all we can try to do is enjoy this game for what it is and continue to report problems we see or suggest things so that the final product is better.

                          • I know this sounds like I'm disagreeing but in borderlands, enemies spawned in the exact same places. The only difference is that the enemies were normally guarding something of value, like a chest filled with money, and weapons. This is what made returning to areas so much more worth while. You could go back to an area and find something that you missed. There is none of that in destiny.
