Why didn't they cut Marth and Ike to introduce Robin and Lucina? Marth and Ike aren't relevant anymore in Fire Emblem, it's not like the series revolves around a set protagonist and characters like Mario or Donkey Kong. Fire Emblem drops the old characters to introduce the new, why didn't Sakurai do the same?
huurf duuurrrff angry [X series fan btfo]
I've been playing Fire Emblem for a long time and I love the series so you can -blam!- off if you want to say I'm a Fire Emblem hater or someone pissed that my series isn't getting a shit tonne of reps. My series is Fire Emblem and its getting an absurd amount of reps. But even I know that this is just Japandering at this point. These characters are only even distinguishable to a small niche of people. This was a Captain Falcon trailer with them tagged on.

  • Why the hell would they remove the characters? They literally have all 4, there's no reason to cut the characters out

  •
Why the hell would they remove the characters? There's no reason to cut the characters out
To make room for other characters. Fire Emblem in no way shape or form warrants four representatives in Smash Brothers, especially when three of them play alike (Lucina is actually even a clone).
They literally have all 4
Yeah that's exactly what I'm criticizing.

Yeah I agree with this sentiment. Link, Toon Link, Lucina, Marth, Ike, Robin, maybe Shulk make for a lot of sword wielding characters. Lucina and Marth especially as aesthetically and gameplay wise they are so similar. People unfamiliar with FE will think Lucina is a female Marth variant. We don't know the full cast though. I guess the worry is that there are a finite number of spots and the inclusion of both these characters means the exclusion of one that may have been new and more creative. I advocated a lot for Lucina to be in the game. But I wanted Marth out. dehutershuter is right about Marth not even being the central character of the FE series. He wasn't even in Awakening except as a non-canonical DLC character.

  • Fire Emblem is huge in japan and ike, marth and Robin all play different, there will always be clones though. Awakening has sold over 1.3 million world wide is pretty much loved by everyone who likes a strategy game or fire emblem game. Fire Emblems has hundreds of characters they could add, hell they could make a FE fighting game with the amount of villains and party members available.

  •
These characters are only even distinguishable to a small niche of people.
Maybe in the West, but Fire Emblem is pretty big in Japan.

  • It's not actually. The series has sold 7 million units over more than twenty years and games. It has a small cult following because Nintendo just keeps trying to make it happen.

  •
Fire Emblem is pretty big in Japan.
That's all that really needs to be said. Most of the Fire Emblem games have only been sold in Japan and the difficult nature of them tends to turn Nintendo's western gaming audience off of them. In the west Fire Emblem is niche (although Awakening is putting it more front in center in the western gaming audiences eye), however it's well known in Japan and a gaming franchise that's survived since the NES days absolutely does deserve to have 4 reps in it.

  •
Fire Emblem is pretty big in Japan.
No, it isn't, and it never was.
a gaming franchise that's survived since the NES days absolutely does deserve to have 4 reps in it.
You know how stupid a statement that is, right?

  • You have no idea what you're talking about. You're denying reality in order to push your own agenda. Fire Emblem has consistently been a top seller in Japan upon it's release and for the most part (baring a couple titles) has been critically acclaimed over there. In the west it's niche, but it's starting to gain traction with Fire Emblem: Awakening. Just because the numbers in japan (typically only being in the 100ks for top sellers) don't match the typical million copies you'd get from something in the US doesn't mean it isn't popular there.
You have no idea what you're talking about.
That's rich coming from you. Fire Emblem has just factually never been a big franchise anywhere. You can check the sales here if you want to actually do some research on what you're talking about before opening your mouth for once.
You're denying reality in order to push your own agenda.
I'd love to hear this "agenda". The delusion has been thick today from people trying to defend the marketing tools in Smash. Fire Emblem is just a series Nintendo has been trying to make happen for twenty years and now that they finally have a chance to get a foot in the door with Awakening since it came out on a 3DS dry spell they're taking it. It's as simple as that. Having four FE reps is absurd outside of basic promotional strategy, and Smash has historically been used for Fire Emblem promotion.

  • >vgchartz and arguing pure numbers when it comes to comparing popularity between countries with vast population gaps Oh sweet Jesus you really are delusional. No one's doubting the fact that it's being used as a marketing promotion. The entire game itself is a giant pandering marketing tool for various Nintendo franchises.
