I've always wondered what's stopping a person standing in the crowd from just pulling out a gun and shooting him at pointblank range.

Ya I would imagine someone could easily do it.

Higher up security officials are trained to spot signs of someone carrying. It's also tradecraft in CIA agents etc. Some methods are ways of walking or if there's something causing a slight bulge etc under clothing. Though there are probably more I just am not an expert on the subject lol.
slight bulge
Wonder how many times they stopped a guy with an erection.....

Secret Service screening the crowds or Marksmen on the rooftops, that sort of thing.

How could they tell if someone had a gun on them though? Since gun laws are so fucking lax, anyone could've had a gun in their pocket. Even the idiot in the horse mask shaking Obama's hand could've been holding a gun in his other pocket.

I guess they might frisk the crowd before they are allowed into that area, if not then they've probably done some training for detecting that kind of thing. I'm literally just guessing here but they might use stuff like Microexpression training to look for potential shooters and to pick them out of a crowd before they can act but I'd be more inclined to think they simply do pat downs on the crowds. They aren't likely to publicise how they run the security operations though, for obvious reasons. But the way I look at it, there are plenty of gun wielding nutters who would gladly try to shoot him - And none of them have even gotten close yet. So they must be doing something right <.<
