I really enjoy this 329 Days of Sun lager from Los Angeles-based Golden Road brewery. It's a great session beer and was a pretty big hit at my last few BBQs.
My favorites are a good double IPA like Avery's Maharaja, or a black rye IPA like Firestone Walker's Wookey Jack.

Yeah I definitely like a good Rye IPA and recently had my first Black IPA and this one was especially good because it's brewed in Norfolk, VA, about 20 minutes from where I live. Gonna take one of my empty growlers there tomorrow and get it filled with something unque. Sweetwater Brewing Co. has a damn good Low-RYE-der IPA that you should check out if you haven't already. If you like a really complex, bold and robust ale, check out the one in the picture above: Stone Brewery's Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale. Brewed like their regular Arrogant Bastard Ale but then aged with Oak which infuses an incredible flavor.
