If we're talking IPA, then ale. Otherwise, lager.
A personal favorite of mine is ginger beer, mostly because it's what got me into liking beer overall.

I've actually never had ginger beer. I'll pick up a bottle of some of that next time I'm at the local beer market (it's a grocery store sized building that sells wine and all kinds of beer). Would you recommend that brand or another one?

I've tasted three brands: Crabbie's, Ginger Joe, and Ginger Grouse. Crabbie's has the strongest ginger taste, it's spicy. Ginger Joe is a bit sweeter but is zingy as well. Ginger Grouse is decent enough, but it doesn't taste that much of ginger, more like a normal beer. It has a little but of Famous Grouse whiskey in it, but it's not very noticeable. I'd recommend Crabbie's or Ginger Joe, the first one if you want a ginger beer that's more spicy, the second one if you want one with a rounder and sweeter taste. They're both fairly similar, though.
