If the Alpha was much to go by, there is not a lot of story to give away. If basically a shooter - a fun shooter, but more like Titanfall it has the "idea" of a back story but nothing of any depth itself. Be happy with the shooter.

 • Look, I understand a bit of skepticism. It helps keep you excited internally when you get the final product. But just because you want to remain skeptical doesn't meant that comparing the alpha to the finished product is a great idea. Instead, take a look at the company's history, and realize story is a driving point of their games. If Destiny doesn't have a great story, at the very least, you can have all my cookies. No, really. All of them. I'll send you a link with all my internet cookies :)

 •
doesn't meant that comparing the alpha to the finished product is a great idea. Instead, take a look at the company's history
But that is exactly what I have decided to do ... historically they have developed good shooters - and here we have another. It is also why I compared it to Titanfall (not sure if you have played it?) It too is an "online only" game with no campaign - well no real one as we got in Halo. So take Halo and remove the campaign and the story disappears ... the essence of what was left in the Alpha. It is more like the Halo Spartan Ops "story" ... which had no depth just a basic explanation of what the mini-mission was going to be about. I was hopeful of a shift - of a 10 year indepth story. A shooter is fine, but there is plenty of those around already and thought we had moved forward.

 • This game has a very in-depth story to it. They just have refused to tell us much about it. They didn't want to reveal much in the alpha either. I hope they won't reveal much in the beta either.

 • The alpha was pretty much a tech demo. It was meant to show off how the game plays not the story

 •
pretty much a tech demo
Except they had it all there ... even in the tower you could see all the elements of game play. Even some small "emotional" concepts like the views into space enticing you onto the next mission. But all that required you to fill in the gaps with imagination from a story told. And yeah, nothing wrong with that. But with a real story backing you would also get surprise elements of the story that you would not had imagined, and that is were some real game magic can live ... just as in a well crafted book ... and with a game it can be that more intense as you have made the investment, the struggle of your character literally winning that right of discovery. Will be happy enough with another shooter but after reading all the press had thought it was going to deliver more.

 • It's Bungie; there'll be tons of story, both in the background and the plot. The alpha was deliberately story-light to keep the focus on the game, and to not give much away.

 •
The alpha was deliberately story-light to keep the focus on the game, and to not give much away.
But it wouldn't have done ... I mean it was like a snap shot of a couple of days in what bungie talked about being a 10 year story ... not a lot of scope to give the whole story away. And part of the test (and same I suspect with the Alpha) is also to test out the non-shooter moments as well. The interconnection of story moments if you like. Like I said it felt more Titanfall, in that you got told the story backdrop (as we have been thus far) but had to imagine how this fits together with the shooter matches.

 • Well, PvP wasn't the primary focus for me. That fell instead to the exploration (Explore? Patrol? What do they call it?) and the Strike, and that felt like something unique, that me and sometimes my friends were exploring this vast, devastated world ravaged by the Fallen and joined by the Hive. I haven't played Titanfall, but I think Destiny's most simple modes share a much greater connection to story than do Titanfall's. They feel much more atmospheric and artistic than anything I've seen of a Titanfall multiplayer match (although TF's intro sequences and VO stuff do seem pretty awesome).
