I've always wanted to know how he could call arbiter a heretic when the Oracle Guilty Spark himself agrees with him.

  • Probably because the prophets did not seem to have favorable opinions of the oracles. At this point in time they (the three higher prophets) already knew their own journey, or at least large aspects of it, were false. It'd make sense for them to spread those unfavorable opinions towards things against the journey since they seemed to want to continue on anyway.

  • Tartarus was fully convinced that he would ascend, and acknowledges it when he says that the "Brutes, not the Elites, will be the Prophet's escorts." So he does actually think that they are all gonna become gods, despite the Oracle's statement of the opposite. The Hierarch's also seemed to hold Spark in very high esteem in the cut scene following Regrets death, though I can't recall the exact words they used. I think that's the point though, that the Brutes were blind followers to the Prophets, not the faith. And the Prophets were insane, especially Truth, though I don't think he necessarily had any evidence suggesting the Journey itself was wrong, or what the Halos actually did that we are aware of.

  • While the brutes were certainly blind, it really does't derive from my point. They'll be lopping up anything the prophets talk about regardless. As for the prophets, I didn't really see them holding them in any high regard whatsoever in the scene(s?) you're referencing. It looked more like the usual "carry along with the sermon/rituals" deal they usually tout about. Mercy seems like he'd be fond of them. Regret didn't seem too thrilled about tanget though. Truth... well yeah, he's insane and manipulative. I'm sure he enjoys them in some aspects over others. In regards to the journey being wrong, I was referencing his conversation with mendicant bias.

  • Tartarus does have a split second of hesitation as he weighs things in his mind, just before he throws Spark at Johnson and gives into his religious zeal. Tartarus has always sought glory for himself, he lacked Maccabeus' wisdom.
