That feeling when...

...I look up at the clock after I finish coding the last method required for my Go Application, the final project of my Java Web Programming Class to see how close I am to the deadline. Five minutes left. Oh dear god I haven't tested the code I just wrote that morning. I quickly compile and run the program several times, making lightning fast adjustments to fix delightful problems like "Oh dear god why is the game window not popping up when I hit the "Launch Local Game" button?" as I test out the major different configurations for starting a game. One minute left. I finish my adjustments, I know the rest of the code works. From the command line I try to recall the command to Jar all the java files and classes needed to run my Go Application. I luckily got it on my first try. 45 seconds left. I navigate to my university's website, log in, go to my class's webpage and go to the submission section for the final project. I load up my jar, tag on a hasty comment to the submission saying "OH GOD NO TIME LEFT!", and windmill slam dunk the submit button. 5 seconds left The screen refreshes. Assignment Submitted: 8:59 AM. HELL. FREAKING. YES.
Technically most of the code is uncommented so I can't call it a complete victory, I'm going to have to go in and ask the professor if I can resubmit the project late without penalty to add comments so he can better understand and grade my program, but I'm not terribly concerned. This is definitely the closest I've ever cut it with regards to turning in an assignment. Anyone else had a similar experience where you slam dunked your work in at the last possible minute?
• I wrote a 20 page paper the day before it was due. That included having read the dozen books I had to read and cite for the paper. And it's kinda hard to bullcrap a paper about the interaction with religion throughout Soviet Union history. Finished it an hour before it was due, leaving me with enough time to drive 40 minutes to get to campus and hand the paper in. A-

    • I was playing Go yesterday, at around the same time this was posted. I'm also a programmer. Coincidence.

    • I've had some close calls with program submissions, but then again for me a "close call" is within half an hour of the deadline. I imagine that will change within a semester or two.

    • This past semester, for my english 2000 midterm paper, I literally re-wrote half the paper the afternoon I turned it in.

      • Hasn't happened to me. So, my friends hate me for this, but I have a ritual where on Fridays and Sundays I just do the work for the entire week. Readings, too, often enough. Then when I get assigned projects, I do them that same weekend in one big sitting per assignment. I never wait, so I've never come even close to missing a deadline. :P

That has happened so many times to me. It usually goes like this though. ONE HOUR LEFT. Crap, I have to finish the last method and then debug the whole program. 25 MINUTES LEFT. Alright, it seems to all work now. Let's just run the last test case....errors...errors everywhere. Shhhiiiit, um okay we can do this. 5 MINUTES LEFT. WHY CAN'T I DO THIS...oh wait, here's the problem. *applies easiest fix in the world* 3 MINUTES LEFT. Okay cool, it looks like it all works and all the ground rules were followed. Oh, nope. I have to comment every method and tell what it does...crap. 1 MINUTE LEFT. Okay that should suffice. EX: //It does stuff with numbers. 30 SECONDS LEFT. WHY ARE YOU HAVING PROBLEMS WEBSITE!? 10 SECONDS LEFT. SUBMIT DAMMIT. 1 SECOND LEFT. Submission complete! I AM A GOD! HAHAHAHA!

            • Never that close. But this is my reaction in almost every exam ever when we're given 5 minutes reading time at the beginning.

              • Last semester I submitted a paper in the last few seconds that was worth a huge percentage of my grade. Little did I realise (until a few minutes later) that the paper wasn't actually due for another hour. The clock I was looking at just hadn't been set an hour forward yet.

                  • Not code, but I did this every day in college with papers and advertisement mockups. Now in the professional world, I still do this.

                    • I haven't had a deadline experience yet, but I've only been through two years, so I'm sure it'll be coming soon enough. I did have a major heart attack with one of my C projects this semester- I thought I was clever to reuse some things by using calloc(). The code worked as intended, but then when I ran a memory check OH GOD IT'S SO DAMN LEAKY. Luckily it was the second half of a project and only our first half was grading memory management. But I learned my lesson.

                          • That feel when you're shitty at using computers, and have a problem with one, and by chance, as you wander and explore your options, you eventually bend the computer to your will and triumph over it. You feel like you're unstoppable for the rest of the day. High five brother.
