Short Answer: Restricting players to only one exotic weapon and one exotic armor piece at a time makes the exotic tier more balanceable and therefore more individually powerful, it increases the variety of builds that we'll see in the final game, and it makes the choices you make as a player much more meaningful.

Edited by Spinalrocket3: 6/4/2014 9:48:23 PMIf I'm a sniper with a hand cannon for backup, I should be able to wield both Closing Time And Thorn, if I've earned them.
-
You can, but you'll have to swap between them in your inventory as you can't have more than one equipped at a time. Choosing in general to wield Closing Time over Thorn tells players more about your Guardian and the type of fantasy and build you are trying to fufill than wielding both, because that just tells people you want to saddle yourself up with as many exotics as possible because they're better than other weapons.

Edited by Spinalrocket3: 6/4/2014 9:45:59 PMIf you can just switch out your inventory, then what's the point of only having one exotic weapon anyway? You can just switch out your weapons to get exotic gear in every slot. Now, don't get me wrong, I really like Bungie and Destiny, I just think guardians should be able to have exotic weapons in all slots. This would only add to the legend all guardians will become.

It's because you won't readily be able to change your load out in the middle of combat without being shot in the face. It's pretty much like trying to change what weapon through the start menu while being invaded in Dark Souls 2. It's nice because you'll be able to change up your playstyle in between skirmishes, but you won't be an overpowered and over versatile I-Have-Super-Powers-Up-The-Wazooo monstrocity that would really ruin a lot of the balance of the game.
-
However, I am starting to see your point. Tell me this: in the Devil's Lair video, you could have Closing time on the outside where there was more protracted fighting at long ranges, and then switch to say, Thorn or Red Death on the inside when you need more sustained, reliable, close to mid range fire.
-
Bungie hasn't exactly detailed how swapping out your loadout mid mission will work but yes, I think the sort of scenario you just named would be possible. As I've alluded, I think something like Dark Souls where you can just hit start and make the swap in the menu at any point you think you won't get killed for it would work out well enough, and would allow for the sort of gameplay you are talking about where you can change up your weapons depending on the sort of spaces you expect to go into. There might be some penalty like "you lose some of the ammo when you swap out one weapon for another in a particular slot" to perhaps encourage people to make wise swaps instead of knee jerk reactions, but yeah, it should be an option.

This "Super Powers up the Wazoo" thing shouldn't have too much of an effect on the gameplay if the matchmaking process puts you with other players that also have all exotic weapons.

It does matter though. Have you ever played a custom Halo game where the host turned on overshields, damage resistance, extra damage on shots, super speed, low gravity, and any number of other weird options because they exist? Sure, it's balanaced because everyone has it, but that sort of power creep makes the game play in a much more silly way than vanilla Halo which is no doubt enjoyable for some but it definitely doesn't have the longevity that you would want the game to have. Likewise with Destiny, carelessly allowing exotic abillities to stack on top of each other could very easily lead to chaotic and unrefined gameplay. The only way to ensure that those exotic abillities can't stack unfavorably is to either nerf the individual power level of each exotic to the point where they aren't overpowered no matter how you stack them, or to directly remove their abillity to stack, allowing them to be more powerful and unique. It's the difference between having "I have a rocket launcher that does bonus electrical damage" and "I have a rocket launcher that lays turrets in the blast zone which helps me to zone people out like crazy". The latter of the two is the more interesting option I feel :)

After this conversation I'm pretty content with my idea of the Devil's Lair Scenario where you make tactical decisions based on the combat scenario and aren't over powered.
-
You're right.

I totally understand where you are coming from, but multiple exotic weapons would improve your experience. Also, Bungie said that you could customize your load outs so two people with the same gun would not have weapons that look alike. That combined with upgrade trees would keep guns being individual and meaningful and give guardians sweet gear to show off.
I totally understand where you are coming from, but multiple exotic weapons would improve your experience.
I disagree. As I mention in my thread, the individual power level and uniqueness of an exotic weapon can be cranked up to 11 when you don't have to concern yourself with it clashing unfavorably with any other exotic weapon to create an unbalanced experience. As I also mention in my thread, if there was no restrictions on exotics, people would have no reason to wield basic, common or superior equipment. This decreases variety more than the minor customizations you can make to exotics would return.

If people have to work for their exotic weapons through a series of long and difficult strikes and raids, then they would earn not having to use other weapons. But you know what, Bungie has a plan, and I will go along with it. I'm sure Destiny will be a great game.
-
Absolutely, and I could very easily be wrong for a number of reasons, but we'll see :)

Yay happy ending! :)
