i don't see the point in that vs getting a pre-built and doing a few minor performance mods. if i were to build i'd only want to use top of the line parts for everything.

You'd have to get parts according to your budget. Same with mechanical keyboards. Decide on a budget and then pick parts which fit in that price-range. If you want a PC that runs game on medium then don't waste money on an i7, get an i5 instead.
