The feeling of despair, the feeling of accomplishment after beating a boss and the deep story behind the Soul games made them unique.
I still remember Oscar, Sif, Artorias, Ciaran, Sigmeyer, Solaire, Gwyn and my fair lady - hell, I know the name of every single Dark Souls character because everyone of them was memorable.
Not finding this in Das2 is because it's not your first game not because it isn't as good. It's not quite as magical as the first time, this same point was also pointed out between Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

Despair and relief are hardly ever present because one is overstacked with healing items - even if I didn't pay attention I found four Estus shards which are more than sufficient, got 15 lifegems, 11 human effigies and still other stuff I didn't count. This isn't bragging - I'm stating that there are too many healing items that the game can be challenging. Did I mention the bonfires around almost every corner? The only memorable boss for me was the Pursuer, because at my first encounter - not the actual boss fight - with him he cursed me. The only character I was able to emphasise with was this person who was so interested in venturing the land to check if the map he found the mansion was accurate.

In Demon's Souls you regular had healing grass to the max cap. These are not new complaints and have appeared with every new release. Watch a streamer on his first playthrough and you will see that for them there is no over abundance but rather because this isn't your first game you are much better at it than everyone starting fresh. All the characters that were loved were because they were so out of place. (Solaire being happy, Sigmeyer being an onion, Logan wearing his birthday suit). Everyone else was lukewarm at best.
All the characters that were loved were because they were so out of place. (Solaire being happy, Sigmeyer being an onion, Logan wearing his birthday suit).
No one is out of place. Their motivations are well explained, as well as their apperance. For example, onionbro being an onion: It's his homeland's armor. It was due to his homeland's culture.
Everyone else was lukewarm at best.
lolno > Artorias & Sif > Quelaag and the fair lady
