Destiny: I Do Not Want to See Explosions In This Game

I find my point to be prominent particularly in the new Hunter Trailer. In this clip, you see a lot of fighting, cool abilities, and just in general some awesome images. But what this video makes me think of is not of 'power.' But 'lights.' Allow me to explain. When watching this video, I heard a lot of 'pewpewpew' noises. Typically, the 'pewpewpew' noise is associated with a game's energy/plasma/laser weaponry. That is pretty standard, and it is acceptable as long as guns sound unique. But what I did not get out of the video was the feeling of firing a killing tool. "But Burrito," you might say, "That is because you do not have the controller and are just watching a video!" To that I say: Pish posh! You can feel the power in something without controlling it. Haven't any of you ever seen a movie and known, through sounds and visuals combined, that a gun or explosion was powerful? Yeah. You have. It comes down to more than just controller vibration. I do not just want to see explosions. I want to feel the explosions. And the weaponry when fired. Sounds need impact, and the 'pewpewpew' noise does not give that. Hell, even the 'Thunderlord' in the E3 Demo, while sounding more similar to a 'real' gun in Bungie games, still seems like it lacked 'oomph.' Even indirect sounds (sounds other than the firing itself) could help, such as reloading sounds or hearing shells bounce off the floor. Weapon and explosion sounds are one aspect I feel the Call of Duty games consistently get right- one of their few strengths. Weapons feel powerful and feel like they have impact. I don't want to see my bullets hit the target. I want to feel it. See the impact, not just the bullet. Basically, what it comes down to is that explosions and weapons need a more powerful sound from what I have heard so far. Pewpewpew is great, but it is not enough on its own.

  • Maybe that's why they fired Marty...

Edit: Actually, you should put it between "to" and "See".

      • I totally agree. I hated that the pistol in halo 4 sounded nothing like a gun.

Maybe I was the only one who caught this, but I could tell that the sound has been beefed up since last year. The weapons do have more "presence" than they use to. Then again, I watched the trailers with headphones on. That said. I agree that Bungie needs to strike that right balance. So you hear the power. Then again, the reason many guns sound "pewpew" is because they are mass-driven weapons. It's the future, baby ;)

        • Agreed with the thunderlord. That gun just radiated power and death. And the guns in the video did seem kinda weak. But the games not finished, and the weapons shown were all assault rifles and such. They will never have the same feel as weilding an LMG with large rounds. But the golden gun seemed pretty powerful.

        • I will be perfectly honest. When I read the title, I thought you were crazy. Reading the explanation, I agree with you. The weapons you wield have to have a certain kind of power to them, not just in dealing damage but how they feel and sound when you do it. I will say, however, that the video is not the final cut of the game, nor does it feature every game that we will be allowed to use. I bet that with each day we draw closer to Destiny, we will see more and more impressive things about the game. I'm sure how the weapons look, sound, and feel will also be included in that.

          • I don't want to see explosions in Destiny is like saying you don't want the game to be fun.

            • Allow me to point you to a piece of gaming tech. This may help some with the feeling of how big explosions, weapon firing and the like.. ^_^

            • I do agree with you on the parts that explain what you expect out of the sound effects bit fact is this is just a video. Once you have the game or beta in hand your sound system might well make it what you want it to be. Me for example i always change the audio setting's to about 55% music 90% effects 85% voice. Plus the fact that i got turtle beach headset with adjustable bass boost worked a treat so far with every game.

            • I agree with the notion that sounds as well as music is an immerse experience and that should it not fall into place correctly it can ruin an experience. I do think that the gun sounds are justifiable though. They don't appear to be like modern artillery but more of a hybrid of what mankind's involvement with the traveler could produce which is why they have to sound different then what we're used to. Bungie also help develop Halo and Oni so they do know a thing or two about how weapons should sound.

              • I have a personal pet peeve with high-pitched guns that push the upper envelope (a la soprano range): it tends to give me a headache when I have to hear that for an extended period. So I can sympathize when it comes to discussing the high-pitched 'pewpewpew' noises. What I'm really hoping for is something with the kick and power of the BR or the DMR. You heard those and knew what you were firing.

              • I don't really see anything wrong with the sounds the guns make, honestly. I mean, in real life lasers don't make a noise before boiling you alive. Unless you're willing to count the whole hearing your own blood boil thing. For the rest of their guns, I'd assume that the Destinyverse is of sufficient tech level that all their ballistic guns are either coilguns/railguns/other mass accelerators and don't use (smokeless) gunpowder. Anything that isn't seems to be some sort of energy weapon or perhaps powered by the Traveler's Light. So they wouldn't really roar like modern guns anyway, you know? It reminds me of the people who want an electric sports car to sound like a combustion engine driven one so much that some manufacturers installed speakers on their cars that produce the engine sounds JUST so a few people could be satisfied. Sometimes wanting something to be like something else just isn't in line with its own nature.

                • certain weapons certain sounds. Red death sounds like a real gun. Also it is a trailer, there will be loud noises and explosions, to excite you. Many of the criticism from the e3 video stem from how slow it looked, meaning the game is probably not going to be like that all the time. Also unless you hold the vibrating controller you will never "feel" the explosions. Yeah so unless you play the game yourself, your concern is not properly placed
