If an employee has been working for the company for over ten years, firing them for no reason is a total crock of shit. There is no justification for it, you must have had a reason to fire Marty, it does not make sense to fire your musical bread and butter for no reason. Maybe he made a joke about Achronos, maybe he he wasn't being PC in front of DeeJ, who knows. But you're going to have to come up with a better excuse other than "You're fired because we said so".

I think he wanted more money. Probably handed them an ultimatum: 'You can either give me more money, or fire me'. And that was the end of that.

15 RepliesEdited by Radical Edward: 4/16/2014 2:46:44 PMTime for some clarification. "Termination without cause" does NOT mean "terminated for no good reason". It also doesn't mean (or imply) that the employee was "terminated for a good reason". It is a way of saying, "we (the employer) chose to end our relationship with the employee for our own reasons". http://hhbg.ca/info-sheet.html "Terminated without cause" is a legal term that is the opposite of "Terminated FOR cause". Terminated for cause means that the employee gave the employer a reason (misconduct, violation of policy, poor performance, etc.) to sever the employment. Terminated without cause is a way of saying "we're done here, no harm, no foul, best of luck, but your services are no longer required". It does NOT imply or infer any wrongdoing or misconduct on the part of the employee. The actual and specific reasons behind the termination are between the employer and the former employee. Just like an employee can decide (at any time) to leave their job (for the almost infinite number of reasons people leave their jobs), the employer can also end the relationship. The reasons behind an employee leaving are their own and up to them as whether or not they will disclose or discuss those reasons with others. "Terminated without cause" is the employer-initiated ending of the relationship in a similar manner. The reason(s) of the termination are for the employer to know and (usually) do not make the reason public (as to respect the privacy of the former employee and to not say/do anything that would harm the former employee or their reputation). It's a tricky phrase, easily misunderstood and misinterpreted. But in an "at will" or a "right to work" State, when the employer decides that the mutual relationship is at an end, it is the "best" term to use when describing the event.
But you're going to have to come up with a better excuse other than "You're fired because we said so".
Just as you wouldn't want a former employer discussing the details and reasons for your termination with others, Marty has every right to expect that the details of his recent departure to be between Bungie and him. If he wants to discuss the matter in public? That is his call. But no 3rd party, no matter how passionate or involved they believe themselves to be, has any right to intrude on the private conversations between two consenting parties.

Edited by DEZARATH: 4/21/2014 3:00:54 AMFirst of all no to Bungie or Marty having to tell the fans squat. Management doesn't have to put out a public notice on why it terminated an employee in a at-will state, secondly the Terminated employee might have requested that they not say anything due to privacy issues, contracts, or the very nature of the offense that resulted in termination. Most employers keep records of annual reviews and write ups on employee performance. Yet in most cases unless the employee sets fire to the premise or stole from company they tend to give positive recommendations for dismissed ex-employees when speaking with a new employer checking references and former employers. Fans wanting a statement makes the offense public knowledge and could adversely effect possible employment for the ex employee. I wouldn't want the reason I was fired all over IGN. Especially if they haven't told me first. Lastly if Marty wants to tweet the reason after the fact, that's his decision to do so. I'd imagine Bungies lawyers have warned them not say anything to keep from being labeled malicious and opened for a lawsuit.

Regardless of the legal jargon, we, the fans, deserve an explanation as to why this was done, even if its not super detailed. This simply shouldn't have happened and its a tragedy that it did.

I'm surprised that no Bungie employee has anonymously posted any information yet. Hopefully someone does. The community loves and appreciates Marty for all he has done. Here's hoping we get some answers soon because Bungie sure as hell isn't interested in telling us why. We didn't even get a podcast featuring Joe Staten before he left Bungie and that bummed me out a lot.

Edited by Pheint3d: 4/17/2014 12:27:39 AMReally sucks that he's gone... From the old cell phones to New smart phones I've been bumping into People with halo ringtones and throwing up some devil horns saying praise the chief.. The only qualification for being fired without proper cause is when someone signs the" at Will employment" document before being hired. I have no idea if bungies employees sign that document. I had to sign it when I got my aerospace job. It isn't very comfortable knowing you can get axed at any minute if someone higher up just doesn't like you...or your difference of opinion... Or if they think you're over paid after x amount of years... Cheaper to higher a few new employees than keep a high paid veteran... The business end sucks..

Well Marty hasn't gone crazy on FB or twitter yet. So i can only assume he's fine with what happened. It seems the audience is the only ones confused.

2 RepliesI like cats.

1 ReplyWell no shit, without cause means there's no justification.

It's none of our business really.

Marty Army. Now is the time.

Especially when they've done a damn good job.

5 RepliesWell it must mean that Bungie is an At Will employer. They may have had their reasons but they are not required to share them with Marty or us.
-
2 RepliesIt doesn't mean he was 'actually' fired for no reason. They just may not have told him the reason. Which is why I plan on encouraging the entity that is the interwebz to be very insisting upon Bungie stating that reason.
-
There is probably a whole lot more to this than we know yet, so I'm waiting to hear what Marty and Bungie each have to say on what happened. But I'm heartbroken all the same.

1 ReplyAll the speculation and outcry I've been reading about this situation is a bunch of nonsense. We've been given little to no information pertaining to Marty's "termination" from the company nor is it very likely we will unless it somehow leaks out from an inside source close to either the company or Marty. But if we're all going to speculate, I'll do so with you. This could have all simply happened because at this time the board of directors no longer feel that they require Marty's services. In the past Bungie has been a rapid fire of development and release with Halo. Each game required Marty to produce a new feel through his music, which required him to stick around pretty much securing him a job until the last game. Now Destiny is on the horizon and judging by the type of game it is, it's reasonable that the way it's supported will be more through content such as weapons, armor, and such... leaving basically not much for Marty to be doing. He'd more or less be earning a paycheck by sitting around in his Ivory Tower doing next to nothing. So instead the board of directors chose to terminate his position until a time where they will need another composer. tl;dr verson: Most likely Bungie has no need for a composer for the foreseeable future as Destiny goes gold, having nothing for Marty to do, the board of directors chose to terminate his position rather than have him earn a paycheck for doing nothing. It's sad, but this is simply business.

Edited by Commander Tempu: 4/16/2014 3:44:08 PMThe Board is a bunch of money hungry idiots. If people are saying that Termination with out cause is good and they are not needed is just quite stupid. They have two games to go and Marty has been a driving force in Bungie for years. They screwed themselves over. So for the next three games they are screwed. No Marty will hurt them more than they think. I wonder if this was designed to get Marty in the hands of 343i for Halo. Anyways...He is needed. Marty i think was fired over creative control and the rights to the music.
-
I'm sad that Marty's gone, but we don't know that he was "fired for no reason". We just know it's nothing really bad which would justify "cause".
-
Terminated without cause means it's not disciplinary. Cause = bad. I'm sure they had a perfectly valid reason.
-
3 RepliesI don't think Achronos has that much pull outside of the web team. But you are correct, there was a cause, just one that Marty doesn't think was worth being fired over, and Bungie is trying to sweep under the rug.
-
We'll never know why. For example: If it was simply because he was asking too much money and Bungie thought they could make do with a lower-cost composer, Bungie would never admit to that (nor would Marty). Marty says it, he looks like a greedy money grubber who should've been satisfied with the cash he was making. Bungie says it, the community goes into uproar about how Marty's worth every penny he asked for.* Both sides want to come out of this without much egg on their face. The best way to do that is to keep it under wraps. *This is merely an example, not trying to speculate reasons.
